Job Purpose: Assist the Jointer in performing repairs, new connections, and fault work on the LV/HV distribution network, ensuring all safety and procedural requirements are met.
Responsibilities:
- Observe all work on live LV apparatus with exposed conductors and ensure safe use of equipment per health & safety procedures.
- Ensure colleagues wear appropriate PPE and prevent public distraction by displaying “Do Not Disturb” signs during live work.
- Set up equipment for the Jointer, lay out tools, and equip the vehicle to carry out site jobs.
- Assist the Jointer on live 240/415 V apparatus and conductors as required.
- Use IT equipment such as Field Force Enablement (FFE), an electronic job issuing system.
- Assist with digging and excavating holes safely, coordinating with the team and external contractors.
- Use judgement to assess job risk, feasibility, safety, and liaise with Field Engineer when appropriate.
- Participate in system emergency storm roles as directed.
- Maintain vehicle and plant (up to £20 k value) and manage associated costs.
- Be prepared to study for a City & Guilds 2339 (formerly 2322) certificate and future Jointer training.
Qualifications:
- At least GCSE level or equivalent.
- Understanding of the Electricity at Work Act, electrical diagrams and isolation/earthing points.
- Units 1-9 of the New Roads & Streetworks Act (NRSWA).
- Basic training in health & safety; on‑the‑job learning.
- First Aid training.
- Awareness of network standards and health & safety policies.
- Full UK driving licence.
Health & Safety Responsibilities: Provide health and safety briefings, understand risks, and apply controls. Support environmental safety and adhere to legal requirements.
