The opportunity has arisen to join an industry leader within the energy saving sector as a Health, Safety & Environmental Manager (HSE). Alternative Heat specialise in the design, offsite prefabrication, modularisation, and onsite installation of prefabricated mechanical and electrical services for new build Data Centre and Decarbonisation projects throughout Europe, with a core focus on mechanical fit-out and supply of pre-packaged mechanical and electrical plantrooms.

The HSE Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety and environmental programs to ensure a safe and compliant workplace within our manufacturing and assembly facilities. This role involves monitoring regulatory compliance, minimising workplace hazards, promoting a culture of safety, and ensuring environmental standards are met or exceeded.

The candidate will collaborate closely with our in-house teams, throughout client engagement and all stages of construction to develop and deliver effective HSE management arrangements. These arrangements will ensure compliance with both client-specific and legal requirements, guaranteeing the safe on-site fabrication and assembly of prefabricated solutions. Beyond maintaining existing standards, the candidate will be expected to drive continuous improvement through both established best practices and innovative approaches, with a strong emphasis on behavioural safety.

Leading by example, the candidate will foster a robust safety culture within the team and across all projects, inspiring commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence. As the primary HSE liaison for our facilities, the Health, Safety & Environmental Manager will establish strong relationships through regular site visits, providing dedicated support and expert guidance on all HSE matters.

What are we expecting from this role? The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in managing Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) functions within the Manufacturing and Assembly, Commercial M&E or Building Services sectors. The candidate will demonstrate a proven ability to implement, maintain, and continuously improve robust HSE programs across large-scale, complex manufacturing and assembly operations.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience working collaboratively with project teams during all phases of manufacturing and assembly, including risk assessments, site inspections, compliance monitoring, and incident management. They will be adept at influencing key stakeholders and driving a positive safety culture to ensure regulatory compliance and the wellbeing of all personnel.

This role will involve close collaboration with senior leadership, including Clients and Project and remote teams, to integrate HSE considerations into planning or and project delivery, ensuring that health, safety, and environmental requirements are fully embedded throughout the facilities.

Key Responsibilities

Core responsibilities of the role:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain HSE policies, procedures, and programs aligned with legal requirements, industry standards, and client expectations for manufacturing and assembly operations across multiple sites.
  • Identify, recruit, and onboard qualified Health and Safety Officers to build a competent and motivated HSE team aligned with company values and project demands.
  • Design and implement ongoing training programs to enhance the technical skills, regulatory knowledge, and leadership capabilities of Health and Safety Officers, ensuring they stay current with industry best practices and legal requirements.
  • Provide hands-on mentoring and support to team members, fostering professional growth and confidence in their roles.
  • Regularly conduct performance reviews, set clear objectives, and encourage continuous improvement.
  • Effectively allocate and manage the team’s resources across multiple projects and sites to maintain consistent HSE oversight and timely response to issues.
  • Promote open communication within the team and with other departments, ensuring Health and Safety Officers collaborate effectively with project managers, site personnel, and client representatives.
  • Establish clear expectations and accountability for Health and Safety Officers, ensuring adherence to company policies, legal standards, and client requirements.
  • Implement quality control measures to monitor the effectiveness of safety interventions.
Essential Criteria:
  • Demonstrable experience as an HSE Manager (5 years minimum) or similar role within manufacturing and assembly facilities or similar, understanding the unique HSE challenges.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of local, national, and international HSE regulations and standards relevant to manufacturing and assembly operations.
  • Familiarity with ISO 45001, ISO 14001, OSHA standards, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Relevant certifications such as NEBOSH or International Diploma and equivalent environmental qualifications.
  • Experience in leading, developing, and managing a team of HSE Officers or similar professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and continuously improve robust HSE management systems, policies, and procedures tailored for manufacturing and assembly environments.
  • Excellent communication skills to influence, train, and engage multidisciplinary teams, senior management, and client stakeholders.
  • Capability to oversee HSE activities across multiple facilities in different locations, managing priorities and resources effectively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate safety data, investigate incidents, and implement corrective measures in manufacturing and assembly settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to embed a positive safety culture and promote environmental sustainability in a fast-paced, expanding business environment.
