We specialise in the design, supply, and installation of a wide range of prefabricated energy solutions, typically built in NI and shipped throughout the UK & Europe. We also offer turnkey design, build, and operate solutions for commercial energy centres and large-scale district heating solutions and have experience with successfully procuring and delivering many similar packages to a wide range of public bodies throughout the UK & Europe.

Alternative Heat is a specialist MEP contractor renowned for its expertise in designing and installing offsite mechanical and electrical prefabricated products. We are expanding our talented team and looking for a Building Services Design Engineer – Data Centres to join us in Banbridge, Belfast, or Dundalk. Location: Banbridge, Belfast, or Dundalk

Hours: 38 hours per week, Mon-Thurs: 8:00am – 5:00pm, Fri: 8:00am – 3:00pm

Salary: Competitive based on experience

Reporting to: Building Services Manager

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing and developing chilled water pipework systems for data centre cooling, incorporating modular skid-based construction for offsite fabrication.
  • Engineering turnkey prefabricated plantroom solutions, including chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, buffer vessels, and MEP infrastructure.
  • Conducting thermal & hydraulic load analysis to ensure optimal system sizing and efficiency.
  • Performing pre-site feasibility assessments and site surveys for seamless integration of modular solutions.
  • Preparing detailed mechanical system designs, including flow, pressure loss, and expansion calculations.
  • Developing mechanical schematics, layout drawings, and fabrication drawings for offsite assembly.
  • Coordinating with electrical and BMS teams for seamless integration of power distribution and automation systems.
  • Ensuring full BIM coordination for clash-free, fully coordinated project execution.
  • Collaborating with structural, architectural, and MEP consultants to optimize space, weight, and access requirements.
  • Selecting high-performance MEP equipment, balancing technical excellence with cost-effectiveness.
  • Preparing technical submittals and liaising with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors for design validation and approval.
  • Overseeing fabrication and commissioning strategies, ensuring compliance with ASHRAE, EN 50600, CIBSE, and Uptime Institute Tier Standards.
  • Staying updated on industry advancements, including modular construction and offsite fabrication techniques.
  • Attending project coordination meetings to provide technical input and design updates.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in building services design.
  • Strong knowledge of modular construction methodologies and offsite fabrication.
  • Experience in BIM coordination, working with multidisciplinary teams for a clash-free frozen model.
  • Proficiency in mechanical system calculations, including pump sizing, pressure loss analysis, and redundancy planning.
  • Excellent time management and communication skills for collaborating with various stakeholders.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Teams).

Desired Criteria:

  • Experience with AutoCAD, Navisworks, and Revit for 3D MEP coordination.
  • Familiarity with BIM Level 2 processes and common data environment (CDE) workflows.
  • Knowledge of prefabrication techniques, including modular skids, multi-service racks, and packaged plantroom assembly.
  • Experience using thermal modelling software for data centre cooling assessments.
