A specialist CAD engineering business in Hampshire is looking for a CAD Designer to take ownership of its steelwork detailing.
The business produces 3D models and fabrication drawings for steel fabricators across the UK, covering structural steel frames, plant platforms and architectural metalwork such as balconies, balustrades, louvres and planters, and it works alongside a sister company that designs and builds spectator stands for football clubs and sports grounds.
This is a key hire.
The CAD Designer will work directly with fabricators, turning architects' and engineers' drawings into accurate 3D models, GA drawings and shop ready fabrication drawings, and over time will become the main point of contact for the drawing work while the director focuses on growing the business.
- The responsibilities of the CAD Designer will include
- Building accurate 3D models in Autodesk Advance Steel from architectural and structural engineers' drawings and calculations.
- Producing GA drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly and part drawings, and jig templates.
- Producing material lists, bolt lists, and NC and DXF files for fabrication.
- Detailing connections to the engineer's requirements and flagging design issues or clashes early.
- Managing drawing revisions, issue registers and approval status on every project.
- Liaising directly with fabricators, engineers and site teams by email and phone.
- Carrying out site measure ups and surveys when needed.
- Managing a workload across several live projects and hitting agreed issue dates.
- Supporting the sister company with drawings for spectator stands.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of experience as a steelwork detailer, CAD Designer or CAD technician in structural steel or architectural metalwork.
- A strong working knowledge of Advance Steel, or of Tekla Structures with a willingness to switch to Advance Steel.
- Proficiency in Auto CAD.
- The ability to read and interpret architectural and structural engineering drawings.
- A good understanding of fabrication processes, including welding, bolted connections, galvanising, powder coating and tolerances.
- High attention to detail and the discipline to check their own work.
- Clear written and spoken English and the confidence to deal directly with clients.
- An organised, self motivated approach and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ideally, experience detailing balustrades, balconies, staircases, canopies, louvres or other secondary or architectural steelwork.
- Ideally, experience of Advance Steel connection design or custom connections.
- Desirable: an HNC, HND or degree in structural, civil or mechanical engineering.
- Desirable: a full UK driving licence.
- What this is offering
- A salary of £30,000 to £40,000 per annum, depending on experience.
- 25 days holiday plus bank holidays.

- Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, 08:00 to 17:00 with a 1 hour lunch.
