At ALTEN, we support some of the UK's most complex and critical defence programmes, helping deliver advanced technologies across land, sea, and air domains. We are looking for experienced Project Engineering Delivery Leads to join our growing defence teams, supporting the delivery of complex engineering work packages across major defence programmes. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in Systems, Software, Hardware, Electronics, or Project Engineering who have moved into engineering leadership and delivery-focused positions.

Location: Templecombe or London

On-site Requirement: 4 days per week onsite

Seniority: Mid-Senior Level (7+ years' experience)

Security Clearance: Candidates must be willing and eligible to obtain SC clearance.

Key Responsibilities & Experience

  • Lead the delivery of engineering work packages, ensuring activities are completed to agreed cost, schedule, and quality targets.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and stakeholders, driving progress, managing dependencies, actions, and delivery risks, and providing regular performance updates.
  • Monitor project schedules, resource allocation, budgets, and delivery performance, working closely with project management, project controls, and engineering leadership teams.
  • Identify, manage, and mitigate risks and opportunities throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring effective engineering governance and successful programme delivery.
  • Support bid, change, and growth activities, including estimating, planning, solution development, and stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Engineering project, delivery, or work package management experience within a complex technical environment.
  • Strong understanding of project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource management.
  • Experience managing cross-functional engineering teams and engaging with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of risk and opportunity management, delivery governance, and performance reporting.
  • Ability to coordinate activities across the full engineering lifecycle and drive delivery to committed milestones.
  • Experience working within Defence, Aerospace, Naval, Security, or other highly regulated sectors.

  • Strong leadership and organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
  • Ability to influence and coordinate teams without direct line management responsibility.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving and decision making.
  • Comfortable operating within complex programme environments and managing competing priorities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or relevant technical military background with equivalent experience.

Desirable Skills

  • Background in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience using Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, Jira, DOORS, Confluence, or similar project and engineering management tools.
  • Experience supporting bids, proposals, change requests, or business growth activities.
  • Knowledge of Earned Value Management (EVM) methodologies.
  • Experience working on radar, communications, mission systems, underwater systems, or other defence programmes.

This role may require security clearance.
