Job Description

What will you be doing?

As a Maritime Embedded Software Engineer, you will join our South-Coast team to support our activities within the Maritime/Defence sector.

Step aboard a cutting-edge maritime defence project with ALTEN Ltd, where your expertise in embedded systems will contribute to the next generation of submarine-based intelligent electronics. You’ll work on-site alongside leading engineers, delivering high-integrity software solutions in one of the most demanding environments. This is an exciting opportunity to combine Embedded C, hardware integration, and PLC knowledge to deliver impactful innovation below the surface.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain embedded software in C, working directly with custom hardware platforms used in marine defence environments.
  • Support the design, integration, and verification of submarine embedded systems with real-time and mission-critical constraints.
  • Collaborate with hardware engineers to troubleshoot and debug low-level software/hardware interfaces.
  • Apply and support PLC-based logic within embedded environments (desirable).
  • Ensure system compliance with defence-grade software standards and documentation requirements.
  • Participate in lab and field testing to verify embedded performance in harsh environments.

Qualifications

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience in Embedded C software development, ideally for safety- or mission-critical systems.
  • Strong understanding of embedded hardware interfaces and real-time embedded systems.
  • Experience with debugging, integration, and hardware bring-up.
  • Familiarity with PLC systems, control logic, or industrial automation platforms (advantageous).
  • Experience working in regulated sectors, particularly defence, aerospace, or maritime.
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, or related discipline – or equivalent experience from UK military/defence technical roles.
  • Must be eligible for, or already hold, UK SC-Level Security Clearance.
