Job Description

As a Lead Electric Motor Design Engineer you will join our London team to support our activities within the Aerospace sector. You will be working on complex R&D and R&T engineering programmes focused on the development and maturation of mechanical product solutions from concept through to validation. The projects involve multi-disciplinary collaboration within regulated, high-integrity environments, requiring robust, cost-effective designs that are suitable for manufacture and long-term operational use.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the mechanical design of rotating electric motor systems for EV and electrified powertrain applications
  • Deliver robust mechanical design solutions across R&D / R&T programmes, from concept through to validation
  • Act as technical authority for mechanical designs, reviewing and approving work produced by Product Engineers
  • Own and/or support mechanical engineering work packages, ensuring delivery against cost, quality and programme milestones
  • Ensure designs meet Design to Cost, Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) requirements
  • Provide technical supervision to a small, multi-disciplinary engineering team (mechanical, stress, thermal, V&V, industrialisation, quality)
  • Interface closely with stress, thermal and NVH teams to ensure rotating machinery meets performance and durability requirements
  • Support integration of motor designs into wider EV systems and vehicle architectures
  • Contribute to and support design reviews, risk assessments and technical decision-making at system and component level
  • Ensure engineering solutions comply with relevant industry standards and internal design governance

Qualifications

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in mechanical design of rotating electrical machines / motors for electric vehicles or related applications
  • Strong background in mechanical product design within R&D or R&T programmes
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary engineering collaboration (stress, thermal, NVH, V&V, industrialisation, quality)
  • Ability to review, approve and provide technical authority on mechanical designs
  • Understanding of Design to Cost, Design for Manufacture (DFM), and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles
  • Proficient in CAD tools such as CATIA, NX, Creo or SolidWorks
  • Knowledge of engineering standards and regulations relevant to high-integrity mechanical systems
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills in complex engineering projects

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
  • Proven track record in rotating machinery or electric motor mechanical design
  • Experience in R&D or R&T programmes, ideally within the automotive or EV sectors
  • Familiarity with engineering design standards, manufacturing processes, and validation/testing procedures

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with high-speed rotating machinery or EV drivetrain systems
  • Knowledge of NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) considerations in mechanical design
  • Exposure to safety-critical engineering standards (ISO, IEC, or automotive-specific regulations)
  • Experience in designing for lightweight / high-efficiency applications
  • Familiarity with simulation tools for thermal, stress, or rotational analysis
