As a Mechanical Design Engineer – Water Industry, you will join our growing team in Birmingham to support projects within the water and utilities sector, with a particular focus on pumping stations and associated infrastructure. This role centres on the design and development of pump systems, mechanical layouts, and piping networks, ensuring compliance with industry standards such as WIMES and delivering robust, efficient solutions for water treatment and distribution systems. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to produce high‑quality engineering designs across the full project lifecycle, from concept through to detailed design and implementation.

Location: Birmingham

On Site: Fairly Remote with occasional site visit to Birmingham

Clearance: BPSS

Experience Level: 5–10 YOE

Key Responsibilities:

  • Experience with Mechanical Design & Pumping Systems
  • Design and develop pumping stations, including mechanical layouts and equipment selection
  • Specify and size pumps, pipework systems, valves, and associated mechanical equipment
  • Produce detailed design calculations, technical drawings, and specifications
  • Ensure designs meet performance, reliability, and maintainability requirements
  • Apply relevant water industry standards, including WIMES
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Support design reviews and ensure alignment with project and client requirements
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, electrical, and process engineers
  • Support project phases including design, procurement, installation, and commissioning
  • Liaise with suppliers and contractors to ensure technical compliance and quality
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, cost, and sustainability of mechanical systems
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in design methods and engineering practices
  • Support the integration of new technologies within water infrastructure projects

Qualifications:

Required Skills:

  • Strong experience in mechanical design within the water or utilities sector
  • Proven experience designing pumping stations, pumps, and piping systems
  • Understanding of mechanical principles, fluid systems, and hydraulic calculations
  • Familiarity with WIMES standards and water industry practices

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or equivalent military experience

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience working with pumps or similar OEM equipment
  • Knowledge of water treatment processes and infrastructure projects
  • Familiarity with CAD tools and 3D modelling software
  • Understanding of project delivery within regulated environments
