Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your existing structural expertise in a new cutting‑edge field. You’ll be working on both developing state‑of‑the‑art products and the assessment of existing designs. You’ll undertake structural assessments (using both manual and Finite Element methods) on rail vehicle carbodies, interior and underframe equipment. You’ll specifically take care of the structural analysis of the carbody shell and the development of the designs to meet the structural and functional requirements of the complete train.

We’ll look to you for:

  • Developing design solutions that meet the structural requirements of the carbody or vehicle equipment.
  • Finite Element (FE) model set‑up, conducting the analysis, evaluating the results, modifying designs and writing the reports.
  • Deriving load cases for the carbody and for different interior or underframe components.
  • Planning structural calculation activities considering applicable standards, processes and specific customer requirements.
  • General Mechanical Engineering design and problem solving.
  • Evaluating supplier calculations & test results.
  • Communicating the progress and results to the Project teams.
  • Writing specifications & presiding over test programmes.
  • Work within allocated budget & schedule whilst maintaining the required quality of deliverables.
  • Managing work undertaken by other sites and sub‑contractors.

All About You

  • Degree in mechanical engineering or relevant equivalent experience.
  • Experience of Finite Element analysis packages, such as Hyperworks, Ansys, Patran/Nastran, Ideas, Abaqus, including both linear and non‑linear assessments is essential.
  • Experience in structural design and analysis is required, preferably applied to Railway products.
  • Understanding of Structural Mechanics and the fundamentals of different Fatigue assessment methods.
  • Demonstrable practical experience in Mechanical Engineering outside of the role of structural mechanics, such as design, dynamics, testing is desirable.
  • Previous experience in using CAD packages such as CATIA, Pro Engineer is desirable.
  • Willingness to develop a wide range of skills and flexibility to work on a variety of projects which require different engineering skills.
  • Ability to define and manage priorities within deadlines.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • A strong team player, with effective interpersonal skills and a positive, solution‑oriented attitude.
  • Willingness to travel to visit other Alstom sites, suppliers and customers when required.
