Take on a new challenge and apply your existing structural expertise in a challenging and diverse field. You will report to the Bogies Head of structures in Derby and work alongside experienced and friendly teammates as well becoming part of the wider global engineering and structures community. You will undertake structural assessments (using both manual and Finite Element methods) on rail vehicle bogies. Day-to-day, you will work closely with teams across the business on both new design projects, the assessment of existing products and much more. You will specifically take care of carrying out structural analysis, and the development of the designs to meet the structural and functional requirements of the products. Responsibilities:

  • Planning structural calculation activities considering applicable standards, processes and specific customer requirements.
  • Deriving load cases for different bogie components.
  • Finite Element Calculations, Linear and non-linear.
  • FE model setup, conducting the analysis, evaluating the results, modifying designs and writing the reports.
  • Communicating the progress and results to the Project teams.
  • General Mechanical Engineering design and problem solving.
  • Writing specifications & presiding over test programmes.
  • Evaluating supplier calculations & test results.
  • Managing work undertaken by other sites and sub-contractors.
  • Working within allocated budget & schedule whilst maintaining the required quality of deliverables.
  • Participating in the creation of new processes and standards for the company and wider rail industry.
  • Performing quotation for engineering work packages as requested.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering or relevant equivalent experience.
  • Experience of Finite Element analysis packages, such as Hyperworks, Ansys, Patran/Nastran, Ideas, Abacus, including both linear and non-linear assessments.
  • Understanding of Structural Mechanics and the fundamentals of different Fatigue assessment methods.
  • Demonstrable practical experience in Mechanical Engineering outside of the role of structural mechanics, such as design, dynamics, testing is desirable.
  • Previous experience in using CAD packages such as CATIA, Pro Engineer is desirable.
  • Willingness to develop a wide range of skills and flexibility to work on variety of projects which require different engineering skills.
  • Ability to define and manage priorities within deadlines.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • A strong team player, with effective interpersonal skills and a positive, solution-oriented attitude.
  • Willingness to travel to visit other Alstom sites, suppliers and customers when required.
