Take on a new challenge in Crewe and apply your Mechanical Engineering expertise in a new cutting-edge field. You’ll report to the Head of Technical Services and work alongside a dedicated and passionate Services team in Alstom UK&I.

Day-to-day, you will manage and control all Mechanical Product Engineering related activities at Crewe, including assurance of product safety. He/She will be be part of the engineering interface with customer, central engineering and relevant Alstom support functions. We’ll look to you to the following:

  • To be part of a dedicated site-based product engineering function providing mechanical engineering support for the overhaul of Wheelsets, Bogies, Traction motors, HVAC and other associated Subcomponents. Liaising with the Customers and Crewe site Project and Production teams to ensure that Engineering activities are fully aligned to support the site deliverables.

  • Through close collaboration with production teams, to undertake investigations both independently and with customers or other site teams into safety related and high value product failures to a high standard in a timely manner. Recommends amendments to overhaul specifications and processes to improve product and / or business performance.

  • To Participate in both Internal and External meetings regarding product overhaul issues within the production environment providing guidance and solutions where necessary.

  • Provide Engineering support for the introduction of new product overhauls, across Wheelsets, Bogies, Traction motors and other associated Subcomponents from Bid stage through to programme launch

  • Provide necessary support to the development and validation of component resourcing in support of operational procurement and Fleet Engineering teams to agreed project timescales.

  • Develop, either internally or in collaboration with suppliers, new repair procedures for any damage found during the overhaul process. Managing and supporting the approval of repairs by customer’s engineers.

  • Provide mechanical leadership and direction to the engineers within the team, providing technical expertise and project management support;

  • Support projects, new product introduction through launch process, customer technical queries, warranty and failure investigations, cost down initiatives, alternative supply sources, whilst ensuring engineering integrity of supplied finished products is maintained;

  • Provide support in pursuance of bids and new sale opportunities for Crewe site;

  • Interfaces with central engineering, methods, quality, purchasing, manufacturing, and outside suppliers as needed.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent qualification, ideally with Chartered status;

  • Strong experience in a similar role (product engineering type of role), ideally in railway industry;

  • Fleet Engineering experience is desirable;

  • Mechanical/Production Engineering experience;

  • Understanding of railway safety

  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to use this technical knowledge in the support of other departments (Methods, Production, Procurement, Projects) and the development of engineering personnel;

  • Experience of developing and applying a range of mechanical engineering process and tools;

  • Experience of working across many different disciplines, with indirect reports to delivery complaint cost effective solutions technical solutions to schedule and budget;

  • Experience of converting the customer’s explicit and implicit technical and functional requirements into technical/ functional specifications;

  • Very good communication and stakeholder management skills, ability to negotiate and influence others;

  • Results driven individual with good problem-solving skills;

  • Specialist knowledge and/or qualification in the areas of torqued joints, bonding, shrink fits or painting would be advantageous

  • English language skills: advanced/business fluent level.
