Take on a new challenge and apply your existing structural expertise in a challenging and diverse field. You will report to the Bogies Head of structures in Derby and work alongside experienced teammates as part of the wider global engineering and structures community. You will undertake structural assessments (using both manual and Finite Element methods) on rail vehicle bogies and work closely with teams across the business on new design projects, assessment of existing products, and other activities. You will carry out structural analysis and contribute to the development of designs to meet the structural and functional requirements of the products. Responsibilities:
- Planning structural calculation activities considering applicable standards, processes and specific customer requirements.
- Deriving load cases for different bogie components.
- Finite Element Calculations, including linear and non-linear analyses.
- FE model setup, conducting the analysis, evaluating results, modifying designs and writing reports.
- Communicating progress and results to the project teams.
- General mechanical engineering design and problem solving.
- Writing specifications and presiding over test programmes.
- Evaluating supplier calculations and test results.
- Managing work undertaken by other sites and sub-contractors.
- Working within allocated budget and schedule while maintaining the required quality of deliverables.
- Participating in the creation of new processes and standards for the company and wider rail industry.
- Providing quotations for engineering work packages as requested.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering or relevant equivalent experience.
- Experience with Finite Element analysis packages (e.g., HyperWorks, Ansys, Patran/Nastran, Ideas, Abaqus), including both linear and non-linear assessments.
- Understanding of structural mechanics and the fundamentals of different fatigue assessment methods.
- Demonstrable practical experience in mechanical engineering beyond structural mechanics (design, dynamics, testing) is desirable.
- Previous experience using CAD packages (e.g., CATIA, Pro/Engineer) is desirable.
- Willingness to develop a wide range of skills and flexibility to work on varied projects requiring different engineering skills.
- Ability to define and manage priorities within deadlines.
- Good communication and presentation skills.
- A strong team player with effective interpersonal skills and a positive, solution-oriented attitude.
- Willingness to travel to visit other sites, suppliers and customers when required.
