Your future role
Join the team responsible for defining the mechanical architecture of future trains in the UK and abroad. We are looking for an experienced Vehicle Gauging Engineer to provide specialist support to UK and global rolling stock projects, bids, platform development and R&D activities. In this role you will be responsible for designing and delivering vehicles that are:
- Compatible with the UK railway infrastructure / environment
- Demonstrably compliant with contractual and legal requirements in UK and abroad.
We’ll look to you for:
- Responsible for the design of vehicles for gauge compliance and compatibility with the network, ensuring vehicles are optimised for performance, capacity and passenger interfaces.
- Development of vehicle requirements for gauging based on contractual and tender documentation, the company’s legal obligations and the company’s policies and procedures.
- Determine and develop vehicle concepts for complying with the vehicle requirements.
- Carry out and coordinate vehicle gauging calculations using specialist software.
- Liaison with system engineers and suppliers to determine and develop system concepts to ensure that the vehicle meets its requirements.
- Production of vehicle compliance and compatibility evidence and reports for gauging.
- Providing specialist gauging support to the Engineering department and project teams.
- Liaison with central experts and involvement with expert network to support knowledge transfer and process development.

- Degree or equivalent experience in an engineering or science discipline.
- Experience in Gauging & Dynamics techniques and processes is required.
- An understanding of the (generic) engineering design process, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experienced user of standard MS Office applications including Microsoft Word and Excel at an Intermediate/Advanced level.
- Specialist knowledge of applicable rolling stock standards and legislation is desirable.
- Specialist knowledge of the Network Rail Route Acceptance Process is desirable.
- Experience in the use of Specialist Gauging software (e.g. CleaRouteTM or PhXTM) is desirable.
- Experience in the use of CAD software, preferably Catia V5 / V6, is desirable.
- Experience in the use of Dynamics modelling tools (e.g. Vampire & Simpack) is beneficial.
