We are seeking an experienced and motivated Team Leader - PCR to play a key role in the day-to-day leadership of our laboratory team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong PCR and microbiology knowledge who enjoys balancing hands‑on technical work with people leadership, quality, and continuous improvement. You will help ensure high standards of safety, quality, and turnaround while supporting the development and performance of your team.
About The Position

- Annual Salary: £31,631 per annum

The Day to Day
- Organise and manage team workloads to ensure business targets and client turnaround times are met.
- Monitor laboratory systems to ensure tests and processes are completed accurately and on time.
- Oversee sample registration review and ensure appropriate tests, methods, media and dilutions are selected.
- Coordinate routine Quality Management (QM) tasks and ensure they are completed as required.
- Ensure retests or additional testing on retained samples are set up within agreed timeframes.
- Proactively communicate any delays in turnaround to laboratory management and, where appropriate, clients.
- Support laboratory management with results approval and out-of-specification reporting.
- Monitor team timekeeping, absence, conduct, training records and competency levels, escalating concerns as needed.
- Provide training and coaching to maintain flexibility, capability and continuous development within the team.
- Work collaboratively with management to identify and implement improvements to equipment, processes and ways of working.
- Ensure all work complies with HSE, Quality, Regulatory and Accreditation requirements, including internal policies and procedures.
- Promote a strong safety culture, reporting incidents and near misses, and addressing unsafe practices promptly.
The Essentials
- Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of microbiology and PCR across a range of methods and procedures.
- Proven ability to lead, organise and prioritise workloads while working on your own initiative.
- Excellent attention to detail with a commitment to producing high-quality analytical data.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to escalate issues appropriately.
- Proficient user of Microsoft Office and Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Understanding of quality standards, with the ability to ensure compliance with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025:2017.
- Commitment to continual learning and development for yourself and your team.
- Clear understanding of laboratory safety requirements, including PPE and safe working practices.
- Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including Science, English and Mathematics.
