The Role

We are seeking an experienced Laboratory Manager to lead and oversee the operational, technical and quality performance of our UK analytical laboratory in Knowsley. This pivotal role will ensure that all processes from sample receipt through to results approval are delivered with accuracy, efficiency, and profitability, while maintaining the highest standards of service.

As a senior leader within the ALS Assay & Inspection division, you will:

  • Drive operational excellence and continuous improvement initiatives, including automation projects.
  • Develop and implement strategies to meet business objectives in line with divisional goals.
  • Build and lead a high performing team through strong leadership, training, and succession planning.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025:2017 accreditation standards.
  • Maintain and enhance client relationships, representing ALS in client meetings and providing technical consultancy as required.

The Day to Day

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the UK laboratory, ensuring quality, turnaround times and productivity targets are achieved.
  • Allocate resources and workload effectively to meet customer requirements.
  • Monitor and report on KPIs, implementing improvement strategies where necessary.
  • Oversee financial performance, including budgeting, cost control, and profitability.
  • Support commercial teams in maximising opportunities and strengthening client engagement.
  • Lead recruitment, training, and development initiatives to upskill and retain talent within the laboratory.
  • Ensure health & safety compliance and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

The Essentials

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in a metals and minerals assay laboratory, including 3 years in a senior management position.
  • Proven experience in managing large teams and complex laboratory operations.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory automation processes (experience highly advantageous).
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently at all levels and across diverse cultures.
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of delivering profitable, high-quality services.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 17025:2017 standards.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and LIMS systems.
