We have an exciting opportunity for a Service Engineer to join our expanding in‑house Instrument Service Engineering team. We are looking for someone with excellent analytical and interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate technical information in a clear and easy-to-understand way. You will be a proactive decision‑maker who is solution‑focused, with a creative, innovative, and logical approach to meeting business objectives.
In this role, you will provide technical support, preventative maintenance, and repair for analytical laboratory instrumentation, working both autonomously and as part of a wider team. This is a site‑based role at either Hawarden, Wakefield, or Coventry, and will require travel to other ALS sites across the UK and, on occasion, Europe. Instrumentation covered is predominantly ICP‑OES and ICP‑MS, with opportunities to learn and support additional analytical instrumentation over time.
The Day to Day
- Carry out preventative maintenance, fault finding, and repairs on laboratory instrumentation.
- Manage and respond to allocated work requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Complete and maintain equipment service documentation in line with ALS Quality Management System requirements.
- Work collaboratively within the Instrument Service Engineering team to provide the highest level of service to laboratories.
- Maintain stock inventory of spare parts.
- Comply with ALS and ISO health and safety procedures.
The Essential
- An HND or higher in a scientific field. Candidates without this qualification may still be considered if they have relevant experience.
- Specific instrument vendor experience, such as Agilent and Thermo.
- Experience working as a Service Engineer, Test Engineer, or in a Technical Support role.
- Experience in a Life Sciences or Pharmaceutical Laboratory environment would be advantageous.
- A methodical approach, with the ability to prioritise workload, manage multiple tasks, and deliver high‑quality work within deadlines.
- The ability to manage shifting priorities and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
- Good IT skills; working knowledge of instrument vendor software would be an advantage.
- A willingness to travel to other ALS sites within the UK; travel is an essential part of this role.
- A desire to learn new skills and undertake training to expand knowledge and competence.
