The Role

Are you an inspiring leader who enjoys working in a fast‑paced, high‑throughput environment? We are looking for a confident and proactive Team Leader to join our Support Services Department in Chatteris. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who leads by example, uses their initiative and takes pride in creating a positive, well‑organised and productive team culture. As Team Leader, you will play an important role in the smooth running of the department, ensuring daily operations are delivered safely, efficiently and to a consistently high standard. You will provide clear direction to the team, respond confidently to changing priorities and take ownership of day‑to‑day decisions that help keep the laboratory running effectively. This role is ideal for someone with previous commercial laboratory experience, who is a strong people leader, enjoys problem‑solving and is motivated by delivering quality, efficiency and continuous improvement.

About The Position

  • Shift: Monday to Friday, 11:00am to 7:30pm
  • Salary: £29,366
  • Location: Chatteris
  • Contract: Full-time and Permanent

The day to day

  • Leading the day-to-day operation of the Support Services Department, providing clear, visible leadership and ensuring the team remains organised, engaged and focused on delivering excellent service.
  • Using sound judgement and initiative to manage changing priorities, resolve issues efficiently and make effective decisions to support the smooth running of the department.
  • Managing staff rotas, holiday cover and overtime requirements, while supporting day-to-day people matters including attendance, return‑to‑work meetings and performance conversations.
  • Overseeing equipment checks and department readiness, including daily balance and sieve calibrations, while monitoring consumables, stock levels and storage areas.
  • Supporting audits, investigations and corrective actions, while promoting a strong culture of quality, safety, accountability and continuous improvement.

The Essentials

  • You have proven experience of leading a team, ideally within a commercial laboratory or similarly fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
  • You are a strong and credible leader who can motivate others, build confidence within the team and maintain a positive, and productive team culture.
  • You are confident using your own initiative, making decisions independently and taking ownership of challenges as they arise.
  • You thrive in a busy environment and are comfortable managing multiple priorities, tight deadlines and shifting operational demands.
  • You have experience of rota planning, resource coordination and supporting team performance to achieve operational goals.
  • You have a good understanding of laboratory procedures, quality systems, health and safety requirements and routine equipment checks.
  • You are a practical and solutions‑focused problem‑solver who remains calm under pressure and supports the team with a hands‑on approach.
  • You are an effective communicator with a professional, supportive leadership style and a genuine passion for developing others.
