We’re working with a leading STM publishing organization to recruit an experienced Digital Product Manager to take ownership of its digital publishing products, services and online journal platform.

This is an excellent opportunity for a digitally focused publishing professional to shape the development of user-centric products within a respected scientific publishing environment. The successful candidate will own the digital product roadmap, lead platform and product development initiatives, manage key technology partners and ensure digital products continue to meet the evolving needs of authors, researchers, institutions and other users.

Working across Publishing, Editorial, Production, Marketing and Sales, you will be responsible for the ongoing development, performance and optimisation of the organization’s digital publishing environment.

You will manage digital projects from concept through to launch, define user and product requirements, coordinate internal stakeholders and external technology providers, and identify opportunities to improve functionality, discoverability, accessibility and the overall user experience.

A key part of the position will be managing relationships with hosting providers, technology vendors and other digital partners while keeping abreast of emerging developments across scholarly publishing, including AI-based content use and dissemination.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Own and lead the digital product roadmap, aligned with the wider publishing strategy.
  • Develop and deliver annual plans for digital content, platforms and product development.
  • Define user needs, product requirements, priorities and acceptance criteria for new products and enhancements.
  • Lead cross-functional digital projects from concept through development, testing and launch.
  • Act as the key relationship owner for online service providers, hosting platforms, developers and other technology partners.
  • Coordinate website development, enhancements and ongoing platform improvements.
  • Monitor platform usage data, identifying trends, opportunities and potential issues affecting users.
  • Improve content discoverability, linking, indexing, usage and article downloads through effective third-party integrations and partnerships.
  • Work with Sales and Access teams to troubleshoot and optimise institutional access to content.
  • Evaluate existing and potential vendors, including performance, cost-effectiveness and strategic fit.
  • Manage vendor procurement, agreements, service standards and SLAs.
  • Work closely with IT and external developers to ensure the appropriate infrastructure supports current and future publishing requirements.
  • Support the development and integration of submission systems and other publishing technologies.
  • Contribute to departmental planning, forecasting and budgeting, with delegated budget responsibility.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement across digital publishing processes, workflows and services.

About You:

We are looking for an experienced digital product professional with a strong understanding of STM, scholarly or academic publishing and a track record of delivering web-based products and technology projects.

You should bring:

  • Strong knowledge of STM journals and digital publishing workflows.
  • Experience owning and communicating digital product strategies and roadmaps.
  • Proven experience managing web-based product development projects from specification through to delivery.
  • Experience gathering user requirements and translating them into clear product and technical briefs.
  • Good working knowledge of XML, HTML, CSS and digital publishing technologies.
  • Understanding of current web standards, including accessibility and JATS XML.
  • Experience working with journal hosting platforms; Silverchair experience would be particularly advantageous.
  • Strong project management skills, including managing multiple projects, budgets, schedules and external suppliers.
  • Experience managing technology vendors, developers and other third-party partners.
  • The ability to use analytics and performance data to inform product decisions and improvements.
  • An understanding of emerging technologies and trends affecting scholarly publishing, including AI.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
