Alma Personnel are pleased to announce that they have been instructed by their Birmingham based logistics distribution client to recruit for an experienced Transport Planner to fill this dynamic role. You will be a detailed-oriented, very proactive Transport Planner to cover the post meridiem routes.

Monday to Friday 9pm to 5.30am (40 hours per week). Systemic routing and optimization of the C&D fleet. Based in the Birmingham hub, you will be responsible for ensuring our fleet is deployed with maximum efficiency to meet customer service levels while controlling operational costs. This is a critical night-shift role that bridges the gap between warehouse preparation and driver execution for the following day’s operations.

Utilise the transport management system to map functions to plan routes, ensuring the most economic efficient routes are prioritised. Adjust resource levels to match volume fluctuations, including liaising with agencies to book or cancel drivers and vehicles as required. Generate accurate pick sheets, manifests, and consignment notes to ensure seamless handovers for both warehouse and driving teams. Balance high service levels with commercial cost-effectiveness and strict legal compliance (including Driver Hours and WTD) to create viable routes for a mixed fleet. Identify "quick win" opportunities such as bulk drops, direct runs, and consolidation to reduce empty running and improve margins. Work closely with the Warehouse and Transport departments to align loading schedules with route departures to maximize productivity.

Technical Skills:

  • Previous experience using planning and routing software is essential
  • Excellent knowledge of the Birmingham postcode area and general surrounding area
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, with specific expertise in Outlook and Excel for data management and scheduling
  • Proven ability to influence and manage peers to ensure operational goals are met
  • Clear and concise communication skills (both written and verbal), with the ability to relay complex information effectively
  • A driven self-starter with the ability to prioritize tasks and resolve problems in a timely manner
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines while maintaining a calm, professional demeanour
  • A degree of flexibility regarding working hours and tasks to meet changing business requirements
