We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to design battery energy storage systems. This includes the primary and secondary structures, control panels, HV and LV sub-systems, and heating/cooling systems.

This role owns all of the design and release of multiple parts across our battery energy storage system, delivering to program milestones and targets in quality, cost, functionality, weight, and timing. This includes the development, testing, and validation of all physical systems, including the cooling system and thermal system performance.

This is a unique opportunity to lead development, testing, and validation of mechanical systems within a rapidly growing and dynamic company. The ideal candidate will have a background in mechanical engineering, having gained significant experience in their career working on electric vehicles, including structures, cooling systems, and battery pack integration.

We are seeking a hands-on engineer who is practical and can build, not just engineer CAD and drawings, as you will support the assembly of our systems on the production line.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and development of mechanical systems, products, and components.
  • Assess strength, stiffness, and fatigue of components, assemblies, and full systems, conducting both linear static analyses and non-linear analyses.
  • Conduct conceptual analysis and hand calculations to develop and validate engineering designs and determine structural performance.
  • Design and develop integrated EV and power electronic cooling and heating systems.
  • Choose and specify materials and components required, create detailed 3D CAD, 2D and GA drawings, and ownership of the BOM and Engineering Product Data.
  • Lead the generation and maintenance of system and component level DFMEAs.
  • Conduct feasibility assessments and cost-benefit analyses to determine design viability.
  • Identify and resolve design or manufacturing issues using CAD and analysis tools.
  • Understand regulatory requirements and define testing activities to ensure the durability, reliability, and functionality of system design.
  • Provide schemes, final designs, and released drawings aligned to project requirements.
  • Support the creation of RFQ/RFI documents and support supplier engagement.
  • Work with suppliers to mature cost, manufacturability, and quality of engineering design.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to technicians, supporting system production.
  • Facilitate the engineering release process from initial concept to finalised drawings.
  • Lead change management processes, root cause analyses, and corrective actions.
  • Lead the development/management of DVP&R schedule.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry standards, regulation, and emerging technologies.
Must-haves
  • MEng degree in mechanical, electrical, or automotive engineering.
  • A minimum of four years' post-graduate experience with mechanical structures and EVs.
  • Excellent CAD skills (SolidWorks).
  • Knowledge of materials, pressings, forming technologies, and advanced joining for volume manufacture plus additive processes for prototyping.
  • Experience in structural analysis (stress, stiffness, fatigue, optimisation).
  • Proficiency in simulation tools, analysing test data and correlating to CAE results.
  • Understanding of typical battery characteristics, pack cooling, and thermal systems.
  • Understanding fluid mechanics and heat transfer principles.
  • Excellent knowledge of GD&T, drawing, and assembly document creation.
  • Experience in safe working practices around HV systems, legislative requirements.
  • Experienced in system/component delivery including FMEA, quality planning, PPAP.
  • Ability to work proactively with minimal support using a logical approach in an environment with minimal documented processes.
  • Must be self-motivated and an effective team player.
Nice-to-haves
  • Experience with electrical and mechanical EV components, including CAN protocol.
  • Ability to challenge experts, consultants, and seniors by presenting measured systematic first principles approach.
  • Knowledge of battery and automotive standards (Reg100, UL9540A, UL1973).
