The High Voltage Cable Splicer Foreman will splice, terminate, and/or repair XLPE, PILC and ERP cables and cable terminations. Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair distribution and/or transmission cable systems from 12kV to 230kV. Plan, supervise and direct crews in performance of work. Familiarity with quality control requirements and condition assessment of cables, inspection and testing procedures required for 12kV to 230kV cable installation and maintenance techniques. Communicate and direct other workers to co-ordinate the preparation and completion of work assignments. Report and liaise with management on job progress.

Responsibilities:

  • Construct, maintain and repair underground electrical power transmission and distribution systems.
  • Plan, organize, and direct workers to perform assigned job duties and tasks.
  • Splice overhead, underground, or submarine multiple-conductor cables used in electric-power or telecommunication systems.
  • Refer to notes, drawings and forms in order to understand how materials must be assembled or how to use materials appropriately.
  • Read, understand and instruct others in a wide range of code books, standards of practice, standard work methods, safe work methods, and regulations in order to ensure that the work is completed in compliance with the industry standards or specific cable manufacturer.
  • Regularly consult standards and regulations involving safe work practices overhead distribution standards, high voltage and low voltage applications, stringing procedures, line clearing and underground cable installations.
  • Use standard construction drawings to determine the physical layout of the environment and objects within that environment.
  • Use a variety of vehicles and equipment including mobile cranes, reel tensioners and pullers and trenchers as well as a variety of hand, power, electrical testing, and “hot line” tools and equipment.
  • Plan requirements for tools and equipment based on work requirements.
  • Must also work in confined spaces such as trenches, vaults, and other areas.
  • The work requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, crouching, stooping, lifting heavy objects, climbing, pulling cables, and reaching.
  • Test for and identify hazards which includes proper locates of other underground plant and infrastructure.
  • Operate and maintain a clean working environment which includes the proper preparation of the specified cable for proper splicing techniques.
  • Ensure members of crew are working within safe work procedures.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work on PILC Cable, splices and terminations.
  • Ability and willingness to travel on an intermittent basis.
  • Ability to pass “Show Me” test with governing utility.
  • Ability to lead others or work as part of a crew or independently.
  • Fluent oral and written communication in English.

Education, Training & Experience:

  • Qualified Journeyman and or Trade Certification from an approved apprenticeship program or cable manufacturer (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience with 12kV to 230kV voltages.
  • Minimum of 7 – 10 years related experience.
  • Minimum Class 3 Drivers License with clean abstract.
  • Ability to obtain Confined Space Entry, WHMIS and Asbestos training or certification.
