JOB TITLE: Transitions and Young Adults Support Worker
EMPLOYED BY: Allsorts
RESPONSIBLE TO: Service and Activity Manager
RATE OF PAY: £12.71 per hour
CONTRACT TYPE: Casual work
LOCATION: This role is based in Stroud, with regular work out in the community and occasional work at other locations in Gloucestershire.
Allsorts Gloucestershire is a user-led charity, founded over 15 years ago to support disabled children and young people (0–25 years) and their families. Our vision is for every disabled child and young person to belong, thrive and reach their potential. We work to remove barriers and promote inclusion by creating a supportive community where families can access practical help, connection and activities tailored to their needs.
About This Role
Are you passionate about helping young adults with disabilities build the skills and confidence to live the lives they choose?
We’re looking for a warm, enthusiastic and adaptable person to join our Young Adults team. You’ll plan and run youth club sessions shaped by what young people tell us, support young adults out in the community, and help them develop the independence skills that matter to them and their families. This role includes early evening and Saturday work. You’ll be part of a passionate, supportive team – and have a lot of fun along the way!
Key responsibilities:
- Support young adults to develop independence and life skills – such as managing money, shopping and making plans – encouraging them to do things for themselves.
- Support young adults out in the community, including on public transport, to access local places and opportunities and build confidence and friendships.
- Listen to young people’s voices and use what they tell you to plan activities around their interests and goals.
- Facilitate inclusion for young adults with a wide range of needs, including non-speaking young people and those with behaviours that challenge, using positive behaviour support strategies where training has been provided.
- Champion safety by implementing Allsorts’ policies and procedures, including safeguarding and risk assessment.
- Communicate positively with parents/carers and other professionals, and support volunteers so sessions run safely and smoothly.
- Carry out other reasonable tasks as required, working closely with the Service and Activity Manager.
Personal Specification
- Experience working with young people or adults with disabilities and/or learning difficulties.
- A genuine passion for inclusion and a belief that all young people should have equal access to opportunities, friendship and fun.
- The ability to support young people to build their independence – enabling them to do things for themselves rather than doing things for them.
- A genuine commitment to listening to young people.
- Be a consistent and reliable presence with the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with young adults and their families.
- Confidence supporting young people out in the community, with an understanding of how to manage risk positively.
- Excellent communication skills, including active listening and the ability to adapt communication styles to meet individual needs.
- Good organisational and basic IT skills, with the ability to keep clear, accurate records.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
- Flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to respond positively to changing needs and situations.
- Willingness to undertake training relevant to the role.
- Availability to work early evenings and Saturdays.
- A relevant qualification, such as Youth Work or Health and Social Care (Level 2 or above), or equivalent.
- Training or experience in moving and handling, positive behaviour support, and safeguarding.
- Experience planning and delivering youth club or group activities.
- Knowledge of communication approaches such as Makaton, PECS or visual supports.
- Experience supporting young people through the transition to adulthood.
- Experience supporting people with medical needs.
