Job Details
This role requires a reliable, compassionate, and patient individual to provide additional support for my 10-year-old child, who is autistic and has a learning disability. Due to their additional needs, they require close supervision and assistance throughout daily activities to ensure their safety, well-being, and engagement. My child is currently non-verbal and communicates primarily through gestures and behaviours. They are in the early stages of learning to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), and support will be needed to encourage and reinforce this method of communication in a positive and consistent way. Patience and an understanding approach are essential, as communication can sometimes be challenging.
Personal care forms an important part of this role. My child currently wears nappies and requires assistance with all toileting needs. While we are making gradual progress with toilet training, they will continue to need support, encouragement, and reassurance throughout this process. The successful candidate should be comfortable providing personal care in a respectful and dignified manner.
My child has very limited awareness of danger and is unable to recognise many everyday risks. As a result, they require constant supervision both inside and outside the home to keep them safe. They can also experience frequent meltdowns when feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or unable to communicate their needs. During these times, the PA will need to remain calm, patient, and supportive, helping to manage situations in a way that reduces distress and promotes a sense of security.
The role will involve supporting and supervising a range of daily activities, including play, leisure activities, and outings where appropriate. The PA should encourage participation, provide meaningful engagement, and help create enjoyable experiences tailored to my child's interests and abilities. Assistance with eating and drinking will also be required, ensuring meals and snacks are provided safely and that my child receives the support they need during mealtimes.
Overall, I am looking for someone who is caring, dependable, and understanding, with the ability to build a positive relationship with my child. Experience of supporting autistic children or individuals with additional needs would be beneficial.
