To be considered suitable for this senior role, applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and have at least 12 years of clinical practice since primary medical qualification. At least 6 years of experience must be at Specialty Doctor / Associate Specialist / ST3+ (or equivalent) level in Anaesthetics and ICM, with a minimum of 12 months of this in the NHS, within the last 3 years. Specialty specific levels of clinical competence are described in the person specification. Applicants must also be able to evidence the generic capabilities framework as described by NHS employers.

The post holder will work to take part in the following clinical work:

  • Anaesthesia care for theatre lists at WTN Hospital involving elective and semi-elective cases utilising regional anaesthesia and nerve blocks independently or with appropriate occasional input from the duty Consultant.
  • Pre-operative and post-operative visits.
  • Preoperative assessment clinics.
  • Support for acute pain issues on the wards.
  • Anaesthesia care for theatre lists across other WWL sites.
  • Emergency Critical Care transfers to ill patients from ECU or ward to ICU/ A&E at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan.

1 in 8 full shift rota. In line with national guidance and Departmental policy, all anaesthetic procedures are carried out under the direct or indirect supervision of a consultant. The successful applicant will take ownership of the pre-operative assessment, anaesthetic management, post-operative care and pain management of their own patients, with appropriate occasional input from the star Consultant of the day. When a problem arises during out of hour shifts, the successful applicant must seek assistance from the General on-call consultant covering general theatres and maternity at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh (WWL) Anaesthetic department operates at three different sites. Wrightington Hospital (WTN) is a tertiary level orthopaedic hospital and our elective Orthopaedic GIRFT Hub. We have 12 theatres at WTN which provide elective and semi-elective orthopaedic surgical services to patients aged 16 years and above. We commonly undertake surgically complex upper and lower limb joint replacements and receive a good number of peri-prosthetic fracture patients for surgery. We also operate an Enhanced Care Unit (ECU) to look after medically and surgically complex patients pre and post-operatively. We provide a wide range of upper and lower limb nerve blocks as part of our anaesthetic practice. We are heavily involved in teaching regional anaesthesia at international, national and local levels and conduct ESRA approved cadaver courses and other ultrasound guided block teaching courses every year. We are committed to training and provide advanced level regional anaesthesia training to resident doctors from the North West School of Anaesthesia and also to MMed Fellows in regional anaesthesia from Edge Hill University.

The post holder will actively contribute to the delivery of the Anaesthetic service within the directorate and participate in the out of hours rota, maintaining a high standard of care. The successful candidate may be required to work across all 3 sites. The post holder will be expected to play a full part in complying with all aspects of clinical governance. The clinical duties will include those duties normally expected of a specialist doctor in a similar sized Trust. Full GMC registration is essential and evidence of further experience and training is desirable.
