The multidisciplinary Pain Management Team at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust enjoy good relationships with the Community Pain service and provides secondary care services on the Wrightington and Leigh sites.

The successful applicant would be joining a dynamic team of consultants, one associate specialist, 2 specialist nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists and pain physiotherapists.

Image intensifier and ultrasound guided pain interventions including radiofrequency ablation techniques are carried out in a dedicated treatment room with recovery on the adjoining ward by enthusiastic and experienced ward staff. A small office is adjacent to the treatment room for full IT administrative support.

The Chronic Pain Team supports the Tertiary Referral Orthopaedic Hospital at Wrightington with procedures for post-surgical/neuropathic pain or genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation for arthritic knee pain. We provide a nurse led self-acupuncture service, Qutenza services, Botox for chronic migraines and Consultant Oral ketamine. There are regular Pain Management Programmes, Psychology and OT and Physiotherapy sessions.

There is a full triage of all patients to direct supportive and treatment measures. There are regular scheduled full team clinical governance meetings. We would welcome and expect any member of our team to further our inclusive pain management and forge stronger/innovative relations with the community and our orthopaedic colleagues.

Acute care is provided at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. This includes adults' and children's accident and emergency services, intensive care, women’s and children’s and a range of medical and surgical specialities. Wrightington Hospital is an elective Orthopaedic Specialist site and our Leigh Day Case unit is currently expanding its portfolio and increasing activity.

The successful candidate will have a job plan developed to accommodate their special interests whilst also meeting the service requirements of the trust. On-Call

Please note that senior positions (AFC band 8A or above) may be expected to participate in an on-call rota, if the role is predominantly operational.

The post-holder will perform all the duties and have all responsibilities of a Consultant Anaesthetist with Interest in Pain Management.

Clinical responsibilities within Anaesthesia:

  • To provide elective and emergency perioperative anaesthetic management
  • To maintain appropriate knowledge and skills to deliver anaesthesia
  • To participate in Governance and Appraisal processes
  • To participate in teaching medical and allied health professionals
  • To work with other members of the multidisciplinary team

Clinical responsibilities within the Chronic Pain Provision:

  • To provide assessment and follow-up clinics for our Secondary Pain Service
  • To contribute to the running of this service as guided by the service lead.
  • To work as part of a multidisciplinary team and support the running of the Pain Management Programme by appropriate referrals and delivering sessions to the group as needed.
  • To understand and contribute to appropriate care pathways available for patients in the Pain Clinic and signpost accordingly.
  • To work with the Lead Nurse, Clinical Lead or Senior Clinicians to ensure appropriate medical care pathways are in place, consistent with the pain clinic model for patients in treatment.
  • To understand and follow the commissioned care pathways for patients ensuring appropriate treatments underpinned by professional evidence and guidance (e.g. NICE guidelines, Royal Colleges, MHRA, Greater Manchester Commissioning Guidelines, GRFT).
  • To have medical responsibility, in partnership with the Trust’s medical leads for all patients under the care of the pain service.
