Emergency Department Paediatric Sister/Charge Nurse | Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust

The successful candidate will be expected to take charge of the Paediatric Emergency Department or a specific area acting as a clinical expert and team leader, supporting their own group of staff.

They will also be expected to assist the nursing shift coordinator in managing effective flow through the department and implementing the ED escalation process.

The purpose of the Paediatric Sister/ Charge Band 6 Nurse role in the Emergency Department (ED) isto provide advanced clinical care, leadership and coordination within a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care, to acutely unwell patient's whilesupporting the professional development of the nursing team and contributing to the operationaleffectiveness of the unit.

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300.

It provides inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community.

Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof.

The £170 million development was completed in 2010, and ongoing upgrades ensure the Trust now has state-of-the‑art facilities, including a Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit.

A new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre, opened in March 2023, has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity, providing almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

The post holder is required to undertake duties, having regard to the NMC ‘Code of Professional Conduct for the Children's and Adult Nurse, Midwife and Health Visitor and their professional contribution to

  • 1) Act as a Clinical Nurse leader you are to ensure the needs of patients are recognised and met by the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
  • 2) You will also supervise and monitor care-planning process.

You will take steps to deal with (and notify) the Ward Manager/Matron of any difficulty in the care planning process and in implementing planned care.

  • 3) Responsible in leading the department team in the provision of care and maintaining and implementing change in the nursing process.

Support others in the process clinical incident & safeguarding patients when applicable.

  • 4) Act as a point of liaison for multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working to achieve the best possible outcome for patient care.

You will notify the Matron of any deficits in service provision from other agencies.

  • 5) Provide registered nurse support to junior nursing staff and participate in the teaching & supervision of all staff receiving training in this area.
  • 6) Maintain the Trust’s aims and objectives within the clinical setting
  • 7) Accountable and responsible for accurate and legible record keeping in accordance with local policies and NMC guidelines
  • 8) Administer Intravenous drugs in accordance with Trust policies.
  • 9) Undertake additional training as required to meet the needs of the patients and register any additional skills acquired as a result of enhanced practice.
  • 10) Ensure that staff are optimal deployed to meet the needs of patients for example working in ward area & ensuring that others on the shift assist colleagues in other areas & adhere to SOP & Trust guideline.
