Trust Doctor (eqv to ST6+) in Prehospital Care | Barts Health NHS Trust

Our prehospital service is provided by Barts Health NHS Trust in partnership with London’s Air Ambulance charity and the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Clinical governance, leadership and support is provided by Barts Health, who are responsible for the doctors. Paramedics are provided by the London Ambulance Service and receive specialist training prior to undertaking their duties. London’s Air Ambulance charity plays a vital role in delivering many aspects of the service including the essential helicopter and rapid response car assets, but also an infrastructure that enables excellent care to be delivered to patients.

Our doctor-paramedic team responds to major trauma patients within the Greater London area, by helicopter during daylight hours and using rapid response cars during the hours of darkness. We are looking to appoint four part-time Senior Fellows for a period of 12 months starting September/October. These Senior Fellows will cover night shifts (Medic 2 car) around Clinical Governance Days each month and 1 in 4 weekends late shifts (Medic 3 Saturday & Sunday - aircraft and car in extended daylight hours). This position is ONLY open to individuals who have worked as a HEMS Fellow between September 2025 and August 2026. One senior fellow post will be offered a three-year appointment with specific responsibilities for Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response training.

Key Working Relationships

The service employs a number of substantive consultants, with most working a 3PA annualised rota commitment. Senior Fellows in prehospital care will work both alongside consultants and independently (with telephone consultant advice) on a 24/7 rota commitment contributing 0.3WTE. In addition to clinical shifts, doctors have opportunities to reflect and learn from cases, realise the impact of their patient assessment and interventions, and provide peer review of the cases of others. Regular scheduled meetings include death and disability meetings, Clinical Governance days and the opportunity to hear from forensic pathologists to correlate clinical and postmortem findings.

Supervision, continuing professional development, definition of core standards and mentoring will be coordinated by the Medical Director and Clinical Lead for Pre-hospital care with peer support from the consultants. In addition to Consultant level practitioners, the medical team includes six full-time ‘flight physicians in pre-hospital care.’ Most of these clinicians undertake 6-month rotational secondments with the service. You will be expected to support the learning and development of this group of physicians and the seconded and permanent paramedics during shifts and educational activities.
