The Hospital is a major District General Hospital; a major trauma unit, a vascular centre, with comprehensive cancer services, providing over 30,000 anaesthetics per year, and over 4,000 births, with over 570 beds. The requirements of application for the post in Obstetric Anaesthesia include experience at an Advanced Obstetric level. Wider skills in audit and governance, and management and leadership would be particularly desirable. Each job plan within the department is designed to deliver a balanced opportunity to enable professional and relationship development, to ensure quality anaesthetic provision and successful revalidation.

Opportunities exist for all consultants within the fields of teaching, academia, research, education and management and leadership. The Trust has close links to medical specialist services in the South-West Peninsula and beyond. Serving a widespread local population, as well as thousands of visitors to Cornwall each year, poses a number of unique healthcare challenges.

The strong heritage of Cornwall has been further enhanced with the opening of the Eden Project and the National Maritime Museum. Over recent years there has been an unprecedented growth in high quality restaurants and family orientated leisure facilities. The Trust delivers acute medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 570,000 and has a higher proportion of elderly people than the national average.
