Theatres & Medirooms Porter | Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (BFT)
The Theatres & Medirooms at North Bristol NHS Trust are currently looking to recruit enthusiastic persons to join our Theatres & Medirooms Portering Team.
The team provides and maintains a professional, efficient, effective and timely service to patients, visitors and departments within the Anaesthesia, Surgery, Critical Care & Renal Division.
On a typical day as a Theatres & Medirooms Porter you can expect to transport patients between departments, move equipment between Theatres & Medirooms, collect and deliver essential supplies and samples, undertake messenger duties, collect and dispose of waste, collect and deliver patient trolleys and beds.
You will also be part of the multi-disciplinary team that responds to any emergency situations that may arise.
You must be willing to work collaboratively within the team, as well as be confident to carry out individual duties as delegated.
You will be interacting with a large number of patients each day, playing a vital part in making their stay as comfortable as possible and raising spirits with a friendly and compassionate service.
Experience in this type of role is beneficial but is not essential as full training will be given.
We provide a 24 hours a day, 365 days per year service which includes weekends, nights and bank holidays.
The Theatres & Medirooms Porter will be required to
- Demonstrate awareness of confidentiality.

- Demonstrate the ability to undertake physically demanding tasks including manual handling of patients, equipment and loads.

Pre-operative phase
The Theatres & Medirooms Porter will assist the Registered Theatre Practitioners in the maintenance of the clinical environment and in the support of theatre efficiency by:
- Support the clinical team to turnaround the theatre and medi-rooms between patients/cases so ensuring patient flow is maintained and efficiency increased.
- Act as a messenger and assist with the transportation of equipment and materials to the appropriate department in a safe and efficient manner, ensuring that all necessary documentation is completed in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
This will include accepting, unloading and returning Automated Guided Vehicles.
- Ensure that patient trolleys are appropriately equipped and safe for patient transportation, reporting any defective trolleys to appropriate Theatre Practitioners.
- Assist in the safe transferring and movement of patients throughout the theatre complex, and between departments.
- Transfer of patients between perioperative areas and clinical departments/in-patient areas.
- Re stock clinical areas as required, ensuring that items are stored correctly. Remove any damaged items and report to the Registered Theatre Practitioners.
- Undertake tasks and roles associated with the transportation of SSD, consumables, and equipment within theatre and medi-room environment and throughout wider trust as required.
The Theatres & Medirooms Porter will assist the clinical team in the maintenance of patient safety within the clinical environment and in the support of theatre efficiency by:
- Participating as an integral member of the team and carrying out delegated duties under the guidance and supervision of the Registered Theatre Practitioners.
- Working as part of the wider multi disciplinary team for the benefit of the patient, recognising and respecting each member of the teams’ role and contribution.
- Ensure that theatre equipment is clean and available for use as designated by the clinical team.
- Report appropriately any deficits, breakages, faulty equipment or sterility problems to the portering supervisors or Clinical Coordinator.
- Assist in the positioning of patients & transfer of patients pre and post surgery using safe manual handling techniques.
- Transfer clinical specimens to the correct department as delegated by the Registered Theatre Practitioners ensuring that all documentation is completed in accordance with Trust protocol.
- Collect blood for elective lists and emergencies and return all unused blood and blood products to the blood bank.
- Assist with any other delegated task within limitations of training and assessed competence.
- Assist with turning round of theatres between patients to support effective patient flow and theatre efficiency.
- Assist with transfer of patients between peri-operative areas.
- Post-operative Phase
- Assist the Registered Theatre Practitioners with the preparation of the medi-rooms environment to receive the patient immediately prior to and following surgery.
- Transfer of patient between in patient areas/departments to theatres/medi-rooms and within theatre/medi-room environment as required.
- Act as a messenger and assist with the transportation of equipment and materials to the appropriate department in a safe and efficient manner, ensuring that all necessary documentation is completed in accordance with Trust requirements.
- Support turnaround of medi-rooms between patients to increase patient flow and maximise efficiency within this environment.
- Carry out, as delegated, the decontamination of the environment and equipment in accordance with Trust protocols and National policies.
- Provide daily maintenance and cleaning checks on patient trolleys
- Transportation of medical gases as required and in line with trust guidance
- Working Conditions / Effort
- Carries out delegated duties under the supervision of the Registered Theatre Practitioners.
- Will be required to communicate with personnel in other departments, both clinical and non-clinical.
- Will be required to rotate between perioperative areas i. e. medi-rooms and theatres.
- Required to work with COSHH regulated chemicals.
- Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment.
- Required to participate in manual handling.
