We are looking for a confident, compassionate and visible Ward Manager to lead one of our inpatient wards at St Mark’s Hospital in Maidenhead. This is an exciting time to join the service as we continue to develop the patient service at St Mark’s Hospital, including the opening of a new ward. The ward provides care for adults with a wide range of medical, rehabilitation and elderly care needs. Our patients are referred from both acute hospital and community settings, and the team works closely with the wider multi-disciplinary team to support recovery, independence and safe discharge.
As Ward Manager, you will provide strong day-to-day clinical and operational leadership, supporting high standards of care, patient safety, staff development and effective ward flow. You will work closely with the Clinical Matron and wider leadership team and will be expected to take the nurse in charge role alongside the Clinical Matron as part of the ward’s leadership arrangements. We are looking for someone who is approachable, organised and able to lead with kindness and clarity. You will be confident in supporting staff, managing quality and safety, and working with partners across the system to deliver safe, effective care for patients. The role includes working office hours across the week, with one weekend in four, supporting visible leadership and safe running of the ward across the wider seven-day service.
Key responsibilities
- The Ward Manager will provide clinical, professional and operational leadership for the ward, working closely with the Clinical Matron, multi-disciplinary team and wider service leads.
- Lead the day-to-day running of the ward, maintaining safe staffing, effective patient flow and high standards of care.
- Take on clinical shifts as the nurse in charge role as part of the ward’s leadership arrangements.
- Provide visible leadership and support to staff, promoting a positive team culture, good communication and professional development.
- Oversee quality, safety and governance processes, ensuring risks, incidents, complaints and learning are managed appropriately.
- Support safe admission, rehabilitation and discharge planning by working closely with patients, families, carers and system partners.
- Contribute to service improvement, audit and change, helping the ward continue to develop as part of the wider community inpatient service.
- Work one weekend in four, supporting visible senior nursing leadership across the service.

Must haves
- Registered adult nurse with current NMC registration.
- Experience of leading a ward, team or service area, with the ability to support staff and maintain safe, high-quality care.
- Able to embody our Trust values of being Caring, Committed and Together.
- Confident using digital systems and able to work flexibly, including one weekend in four during office hours.
