Looking for a new challenge in the NHS and making a difference in your community? We have an exciting opportunity in the West Berkshire Community Nursing Team for a Phlebotomist to join the team of clinicians in West Berkshire (Newbury) providing care to patients in their own homes.

The post holder will be required to collect blood samples from patients in their own homes and other residential settings when they are too unwell to attend the GP surgery. The post holder will be required to perform a range of venepuncture techniques in a variety of clinical settings and will work without direct supervision. You will work alongside the District Nurses and Community Matrons and will be required to liaise with clinicians, other healthcare professionals including laboratory staff, with patients and their representatives and with commercial suppliers.

Preferably the post holder is an experienced Phlebotomist who has experience in the provision of a quality blood collection service; however, full training and supervision will be provided for the right applicant. It's important that you have a calm approach, the ability to prioritise and work in a busy team. A driving license and access to a car is essential, due to the travel involved.

  • Collects blood samples from patients in their own homes or other residential settings using evidence-based venepuncture procedures.
  • Monitors and maintains the health, safety and security of self and patients during the venepuncture procedure.
  • Practices within risk management/occupational health legislation and Trust procedures.
  • Collects samples from patients in high-risk categories and is aware of potential hazards.
  • Is able to follow agreed protocol to minimise risk to self and others.
  • Performs telephone duties that include making and receiving calls from and to the phlebotomy unit, conveying sensitive information and advice to healthcare professionals, patients and their representatives.

The “must haves” for you to be considered for this role:

  • Full UK driving Licence.
  • Grade 9-4 (A-C) GCSE Maths and English – or functional skills level 2 in Maths and English.
