The post holder will be responsible for providing a specialised casting and splinting service both within the department and the wider hospital environment as required. You will be expected to learn the skills and expertise in this discipline if you do not hold a British Casting Certificate. You will provide the fundamentals of care to patients, ensuring high standards are maintained in a safe environment. Patients, family, relatives and colleagues will be treated with respect, dignity and courtesy in accordance with Trust values and policies.

The post will involve:

  • Working within the plaster room setting including operating theatre, the Emergency Department and in-patient wards.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate casting and splinting techniques.
  • Maintain a high standard of patient care and be aware of the broader understanding of patient health care.
  • Educate patients and significant others on problems associated with living with a cast/splint.
  • Recognise legal implications of documentation and complete accurate legible records.
  • Make decisions on the most suitable materials and techniques to use for each individual person.
  • Follow department and consultant guidelines regarding patient’s pathways of care.
  • Provide wound care appropriate to the patients’ needs and record this in line with department documentation standards.
  • Manage the maintenance of the plaster room ensuring it is safe and tidy. Equipment is cleaned, checked and serviced. Health & Safety regulations are adhered to.
  • Providing a telephone advice service to patients who have had casts applied.
  • Monitor the stock levels and ensure relevant stock is ordered of all casting materials and associated equipment.
  • Demonstrate awareness of financial resources and budgetary control and liaise with senior staff regarding efficient, effective use of resources.

Hold or plan to undertake the British Casting Certificate.

Provide an expert casting and splinting service. Maintain a high standard of patient care and be able to recognise potential complications and health care issues and report to the relevant person. Recognise legal implications of documentation and complete accurate legible records. Provide wound care appropriate to the patients’ needs and record this in line with department documentation standards. Manage equipment within the Plaster Room ensuring it is maintained and serviced.
