Responsibilities
- Provide and co‑ordinate Technical Pharmacy Services for the entire Technical Services section of the Pharmacy.
- Manage day‑to‑day activities of staff, allocate work, and provide training to new staff.
- Collaborate closely with other professionals, including pharmacists, consultants, nurses, doctors, and additional Pharmacy staff.
- Follow departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and policies at all times and refer to the Chief Technician when appropriate.
- Perform in‑SOP checks of manufactured items.
- Coordinate the supply of chemotherapy and other aseptic products.
- Report any deviations from standard procedures to the unit manager and implement required changes.
- Participate in GMP training rota and provide training sessions for staff within the aseptic unit.
- Assist the unit manager with maintenance of documentation systems.
- Compounding of all preparations dispensed within aseptic services, including cytotoxics, monoclonal antibodies, and radiopharmaceuticals.
- Complete worksheets, transcribe detailed information, and carry out complex calculations.
- Take part in the cleaning rota for all equipment, including the aseptic unit, radiopharmacy, and isolators.
- Work early and late finishes, weekend and bank holiday shifts, and cross‑site assignments.
- Assist with recruitment and selection of staff, including interviewing, induction, and training.
- Assist with investigation and resolution of production product issues.
- Deputise for the Chief Technician in all aspects of Technical Services, ensuring effective discharge of responsibilities.
- Conduct final checks of aseptically prepared products and product release for named patients against pharmacist’s request forms.
- Oversee day‑to‑day management of all staff in Technical Services in partnership with other Specialist Technician Team Leaders.
- Allocate work across sections of Technical Services jointly with other team leaders.
- Provide induction training for new staff.
- Liaise with nurses and clinicians to provide a high‑quality service.
- Take an active part in Good Manufacturing Practice team meetings.
- Perform system manager duties, ensuring the unit remains within specification for manufacturing and capacity planning.
- Maintain personal competencies for product checking, validation, dispensing, and accuracy checks.
- Use the EPISYS labelling system to produce dispensing labels for stock, patient doses, and prescriptions.
- Ensure accurate records of manufactured or dispensed products, including controlled drug records as appropriate.
- Prepare workload statistics and provide data on production unit output.
- Perform spot checks on raw materials, packaging components, consumables, and finished products per Trust audit requirements.
- Identify quality alerts, perform root‑cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
- Ensure all goods used within production services are approved items and coordinate approval of new items with Quality Assurance.
- Notify key personnel of major faults within the unit and liaise with estates and production directors as necessary.
- Ensure the proper use, maintenance, and cleaning of equipment and facilities.
- Maintain all necessary production records and controls.
- Participate in unit clinical trials and conduct weekly audits of Pharmacy Technical Services procedures and processes.
- Ensure safe and secure storage of all drug and consumable stock.
- Assist with the purchase of medicines, equipment, and resources for manufacturing and preparation of medicines.
- Ensure safe and secure use of specialist pharmaceutical equipment, including isolators.
