We have an exciting opportunity to join our Ophthalmic Imaging team in University Hospital Southampton Hospital as one of our Ophthalmic Imaging Assistants who will need to have the following:
- Provide a range of Ophthalmic imaging and Visual Field measurement for the Eye Unit Out-patients / in-patients and people attending Eye causality at UHS.
- Help cover our satellite clinic in Lymington New Forest Hospital on rotation.
- Undertake specialised measurements of the internal and external eye using a variety of equipment.
- Conduct visual field assessments using the appropriate choice of equipment.
- Undertake specialised imaging of the eye, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for clinical purposes.
- Maintain clinical records in relation to all procedures carried out.

Responsibilities include:
- Delivery of specialised clinical diagnostic imaging procedures, which meet the highest possible standards with a very high degree of reproducibility.
- Accurately enter patient data into each imaging platform, to ensure the images captured are for the correct patient.
- Liaison with specialist Ophthalmic Consultants, Optometrists and Nursing staff, to ensure accurate diagnosis and care pathway for the patient.
- A detailed understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the eye and a sound knowledge of ophthalmic conditions is a fundamental requirement of the ophthalmic assistant, thus ensuring the best representation of the condition is described in the imaging.
- Conversant with Visual Fields and the pathology of disease so as to be able to undertake without supervision.
- Testing of patient’s visual fields and visual acuity for diagnosis and treatment.
- Assessment of patient’s ability to pass the DVLA (Driving Vehicle Licensing Authority) requirement for Visual Fields and Visual Acuity.
- Using the following equipment: Focimeter, LOGMAR chart.
- Proficient and confident in the imaging of patients' Retina, Optic Discs and Corneas using: Optical Coherence Tomography (O.C.T.), Retinal Fundal Photography, and other ophthalmic imaging equipment as necessary.
