University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced Oculoplastic Consultant to join the Ophthalmology team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, helping to deliver specialist eye care across the region.

This is an exciting opportunity for a consultant with expertise in oculoplastics, orbital disease and thyroid eye disease, who is passionate about patient care, teaching and service development, to join a team of two established Oculoplastic Consultants, a Fellow and a dedicated Nurse Specialist.

The successful candidate will provide specialist assessment, treatment and ongoing management of patients across oculoplastic, orbital and thyroid eye disease services. They will participate in dedicated subspecialty clinics, multidisciplinary team (MDT) pathways and tertiary referral services, contributing to both elective and emergency care.

The role offers regular theatre sessions covering oculoplastic surgery, orbital surgery and endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) procedures, while supporting the training and development of trainees. Working closely with colleagues across the Trust and the University of Southampton, the successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to research, education and service improvement. This role offers the chance to make a real difference to patients while helping to shape the future of oculoplastic and orbital services within one of the UK's leading tertiary ophthalmic centres.

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated 'Good' by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will lead multiple outpatient clinics and operating sessions each week, delivering specialist care across the full range of oculoplastic, orbital and thyroid eye disease services. A key aspect of the role will be active participation in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, including skin cancer, neuro-orbital, head and neck, and skull base MDTs, supporting the assessment and management of patients referred to the orbital and oculoplastic services. The post holder will work closely with colleagues across the Trust and may be asked to provide specialist advice to other clinical teams to support decision making in complex cases involving cancer, inflammatory disease and congenital malformations. Teaching, supervision and mentorship of fellows, specialty trainees and junior doctors are an integral part of the role and are a mandatory requirement of the post.

The role offers the opportunity to be involved in the management of a wide range of urgent and complex oculoplastic and orbital conditions, with additional theatre sessions arranged when required to support emergency care. The successful candidate will work closely with specialist colleagues across the Trust, including Neurosurgery, ENT and Maxillofacial Surgery teams, and with external Mohs surgery services on occasion, providing multidisciplinary care for patients with complex reconstructive, oncological and orbital conditions.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

  • Full GMC registration
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Ideally, the candidate would have CCT or be within 3 months of completion of CCT
  • Fellowship training in Oculoplastics and Orbit
  • Candidate must have a strong orbital and oculoplastic training experience in a well-recognised orbital fellowship programme
