We are looking for a Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our Microbiology team. The post will involve supporting the department in providing diagnostic services and includes:

  • Data entry
  • Manual, semi-automated and automated technical procedures
  • Dealing with telephone enquiries
  • Store-keeping
  • Stock control
  • Laboratory waste disposal

The successful applicant must be conscientious and enthusiastic and able to work well as part of a team and under pressure. They must also have good communication and IT skills. Relevant experience would be an advantage; however, full training will be provided.

The laboratory provides a 7 day, extended service. The successful applicant will be required to participate in the shift system.

Informal visits to the department are welcomed.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working as part of the Microbiology laboratory team, helping to support an important service for patient care
  • Handling patient samples by receiving, labelling, preparing and processing them using clear written instructions
  • Carrying out simple laboratory and office tasks, including using computers, keeping records and answering basic phone calls
  • Helping keep the laboratory safe and well organised by cleaning equipment, checking supplies and following health and safety rules
  • Working under supervision and communicating clearly with colleagues and other departments
  • Being willing to work in different laboratory areas and take part in evening, weekend and bank holiday shifts when needed
