This is an exciting post, designed to support academic delivery in the School of Health and Social Care at Sheffield Hallam University. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching specifically identified subjects and topics relating to healthcare predominantly with our BSc and MSc nursing courses. The role will include teaching clinical skills, simulation-based sessions, mandatory training, and offers an opportunity to gain experience in delivering teaching through a variety of modes. This role involves providing student feedback and support to students in university and in clinical practice. This role will appeal to people who are interested in working within healthcare education and is suitable for new healthcare registrants. The successful candidates will work as part of a team to contribute positively to the student experience.

The School of Health and Social Care delivers a well-established, large and diverse portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate and degree apprenticeship courses leading to registration in 14 different professions. These include Nursing – all fields, Midwifery, Social Work, Paramedic Science, Operating Department Practitioner, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Diagnostic Radiography, Radiotherapy and Oncology, Dietetics and Art Psychotherapy. We support practitioners to continue to develop their professional roles through our extensive continuing professional development portfolio, our graduates working in local, national, and international health and social care sectors. Our research portfolio is cutting edge and applied, undertaking challenge-led collaborative interdisciplinary research, innovation and knowledge exchange to inform and transform health and social care.

The University currently enrols eligible academic staff into the Teachers Pension Scheme – TPS, a defined-benefit pension scheme. Should you be enrolled into TPS, each year you will earn a secure pension benefit of 1-57th of your salary and the University will pay pension contributions towards the cost of this pension (currently worth about 29 percent of your salary). For a salary of 42,000, for example, the University would pay just over 12,000 in the first year of your employment and you would earn a pension of 737 p.a. for that year (payable from your State Pension Age).

This role is based at Collegiate Campus, a leafy suburban setting off the vibrant Ecclesall Road. We understand the need for a healthy work-life balance. For academic staff, hybrid working arrangements are scheduled around student-facing time and business activity.

The selection event will include an interview and a microteaching session. We would like you to prepare and deliver a 10-minute engaging, micro teaching session on a subject of your choice suitable for 1st year nursing students. The post holder performs a range of duties and responsibilities from those listed below. The balance and priority of these will vary between Schools/ Institute and post holders:

  • Deliver high-quality, inclusive and engaging teaching across modules or subject areas, using appropriate pedagogic and digital approaches to support student learning and success.
  • Contribute to the design and development of learning activities, teaching materials and assessment tasks, ensuring learning resources are prepared and available.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of teaching sessions, simulations and workshops, for individuals or groups of students, aligned to course and professional requirements.
  • Provide constructive assessment and feedback, within stipulated timeframes, ensuring that feedback promotes student learning, progression, academic integrity and achievement.
  • Support students' progress and engagement through academic guidance, feedback and appropriate signposting to university pastoral and support services where required, contributing to student wellbeing, belonging and transition through their studies.
  • Contribute to curriculum delivery and enhancement activities within a course or subject area, including participation in review, evaluation and quality processes.
  • Participate in academic teams and communities of practice, sharing best practice that contributes to collaborative delivery of teaching and student support.
  • Engage in continuing professional development to maintain and enhance own subject knowledge, teaching practice and professional standing, including engagement with the Performance and Development Review (PDR) process and participation in peer learning, knowledge sharing and academic communities where appropriate.

  • Essential Attainment Criteria: Registered Healthcare Professional (NMC/HCPC), Good honours degree (i.e. UK 2.1 or 1st Class) in a relevant discipline.
  • Desirable Attainment Criteria: A post graduate teaching qualification (PG Cert or HEA fellowship) or a commitment to undertake a teaching qualification during your employment.
  • Essential Knowledge and Experience Criteria: Experience of supporting teaching, training, supervision or professional practice involving the development of others, using inclusive approaches. Well-developed and current knowledge and understanding of critical, practical and theoretical issues relevant to Nursing. Understanding of, and ability to work within, relevant regulatory, academic or professional frameworks (e.g. standards, policies and procedures).
  • Essential Skills Criteria: Ability to deliver innovative, high quality and inclusive learning experiences across a range of teaching mediums and contexts. Ability to work independently using judgement to identify and resolve issues, with appropriate guidance and escalation where required. Good team working skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, students and partners. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with students, colleagues and other stakeholders. Good planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage workload, prioritise tasks and deliver work to agreed deadlines and standards. Ability to adapt to changing priorities in support of academic delivery. Proficient in the use of IT systems; awareness and capability to learn and use new technologies, digital tools/platforms and specialist equipment.
