An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Surgical Specialties Division at University College London Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, for a talented and dynamic Service Manager to assist in the management of our Trauma and Orthopaedic service.

You will support the Assistant General Manager in overseeing the operational delivery of the Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Grafton Way Building, and work closely with the wider MDT and colleagues from across the NCL Orthopaedic Network to drive improvement of clinical services amongst a wide variety of other interesting improvement projects.

You will also lead administrative teams in providing excellent services to patients whilst being responsible for achieving performance targets including RTT, activity and workforce alongside managing both elective and non-elective pathways for patients. This would be an ideal opportunity for a current service manager looking to gain experience in a busy and high performing surgical service or a driven individual that possesses the qualities needed to take their first step into service management.

  • People Management
    • Lead and support administration teams in recruitment, training, appraisals, and disciplinary processes.
    • Ensure effective service delivery, monitor patient pathways, and manage workloads.
    • Mentor team members, promote teamwork, and address training needs.
    • Develop staff engagement and customer service initiatives.
    • Manage staffing budget, optimize resources, and maintain financial control.
    • Collaborate on efficiency improvements and cost-saving targets.
    • Ensure quality controls to meet CQUIN targets and avoid financial penalties.
    • Contribute to business cases.
  • Strategic Management and Service Redesign
    • Redesign patient pathways in Trauma & Orthopaedics to maximize resources and enhance patient care.
    • Provide flexible theatre scheduling to optimize utilisation.
    • Lead projects within the service and report progress.
  • Electronic Health Record System (EHRS)
    • Attend IT training and support EPIC developments and functionality.
  • Communication and Relationship Skills
    • Liaise professionally with hospital personnel.
    • Resolve issues, handle queries, and manage messages.
    • Empathize with patients during PALS and complaint investigations.
    • Establish links with interfacing services to ensure effective patient care.
  • Access Targets
    • Lead validation of patient pathways and data quality.
    • Oversee data quality reports and improve data with team leaders.
    • Plan demand and capacity, manage clinic and list templates, and elevate waiting time breaches as needed.
