An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) to join the dynamic Day Surgery Unit (DSU) team at UCH as a Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse/Practitioner. Our service provides exposure to a wide range of surgical specialties, including General Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Bariatrics and Upper GI, Colorectal, Gynaecology, Urology, Oncology, Paediatrics, ENT, Maxillofacial, Vascular, and Plastic/Breast surgery, including Robotic procedures.

As a Band 6 practitioner, you will demonstrate strong clinical expertise in perioperative and peri‑anaesthesia care, alongside leadership skills to support the day‑to‑day coordination of the unit. You will play a key role in ensuring safe, efficient patient flow and high standards of care throughout the surgical pathway.

In this senior role, you will contribute to service improvement, staff supervision, and the delivery of outstanding patient outcomes within the Day Surgery setting. As a Band 6 Senior Staff Nurse within the Day Surgery / Surgical Admissions Unit, you will play a pivotal role in supporting patients throughout their surgical journey, ensuring they feel informed, reassured, and well prepared for their procedure.

You will undertake comprehensive pre‑operative assessments, deliver patient education, and ensure all clinical and administrative requirements are completed to facilitate safe and efficient admissions. You will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate effective patient flow, ensuring documentation is complete, required investigations are available, and any risks or concerns are escalated promptly to maintain patient safety.

You will be responsible for delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care by planning, implementing and evaluating individualised care for a diverse case mix, promoting evidence‑based practice and maintaining high clinical standards. As a senior practitioner, you will take charge of the department in the absence of the Sister/Charge Nurse, providing leadership, supervision, and support to junior colleagues and unregistered staff to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care.
