We are seeking enthusiastic and self-motivated pharmacists to join our large team of band 7 senior pharmacists to provide pharmacy and medicines optimisation services to patients at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Pharmacy Department is highly regarded in the Trust and has 270 staff members. The department is friendly, forward thinking and constantly expanding with opportunities for personal development and further postgraduate education. It is compulsory for our pharmacists to complete a postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy or equivalent. Furthermore, we are constantly expanding our pool of non-medical prescribing pharmacists. We support pharmacists to pursue opportunities in research to further expand their portfolio.

Investment in facilities includes automated dispensing in our large main dispensary, which covers inpatient, outpatient and home delivery services. We have four satellite dispensaries, attached to specialist areas to promote efficient dispensing. Our dispensaries are led by experienced pharmacy technicians allowing clinical staff to focus on patient care, medicines optimisation and care group work. Omnicell cabinets are used in the Emergency Department and Major Trauma Ward, supporting automated pharmacy services on ward level. The aseptic unit holds a “Specials” Manufacturing Authorisation (MS) licence by MHRA.

Our band 7 pharmacists support discharges through transcribing and non-medical prescribing in most of our rotations. Rotations include antibiotics and infectious diseases, critical care, haematology and oncology, paediatrics, surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, acute and specialist medicine, cardiology, cardiac surgery, technical services, clinical trials, and patient services. There is the exciting opportunity to participate in a secondment to the island of St Helena.

Main Duties:

  • Be a role model and actively promote safe, evidence-based prescribing
  • Actively participate in safe and timely discharge through transcribing and non-medical pharmacist prescribing, criteria-led discharge roles and engagement with the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead medicines optimisation services in your designated specialty
  • Use initiative and forward thinking and demonstrate an ability to influence a wide range of health care professionals
  • Provide education and training for undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare professionals
  • Be actively involved in audit and research
  • Deliver metrics that demonstrate the benefit of pharmacy in providing pharmaceutical services to patients

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, experienced and capable clinical pharmacist with good interpersonal and influencing skills.

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust itself is a major acute hospital that offers specialist care for complex injuries and illnesses, including trauma, neurology, neurosurgery, cardiac care, lipid disorders, renal transplantation, cancer care and stroke. We are the regional specialist care provider for South-West London, Surrey and beyond. Acute and tertiary health services are delivered from over 1,000 beds across two sites, by around 8,000 staff.

The hospital also provides all the usual care you would expect from a local NHS district general hospital. We provide services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton. These include outpatient rapid diagnostic and treatment facilities, a minor injuries unit, limb fitting services and 70 elderly, intermediate care and rehabilitation beds. Our main site, St George’s Hospital in Tooting – one of the country’s principal teaching hospitals – is shared with St George’s, University of London.

As part of GESH collaborative work, we are working together on this recruitment campaign with Epsom and St Helier Hospital. This means that there may be an opportunity to work at either Trust in a similar role and there will be representation from both Trusts at the interview. Further details will be provided with interview invites.

You must possess a postgraduate certificate in clinical pharmacy or equivalent and have a minimum of 18 months hospital pharmacy experience. Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team would be an advantage.
