We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and experienced clinicians to join our team in the Children’s Emergency Department (CED) at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, and the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Paediatric pool with MSF France. This role involves paired 6-month postings in the CED and in the field with MSF on two separate contracts.

In the CED, Senior Clinical Fellows will be responsible for the initial assessment and management of acutely unwell and injured children who self-present to the Children’s Emergency Department or who are referred by their GP. They will work alongside the multi-disciplinary team in the Children’s Emergency Department to provide excellent care to children from our local area and around the South-West.

In the field with MSF, they will have the opportunity to work in an international humanitarian organisation to respond to critical situations such as measles epidemics, nutritional crises or displaced populations. Alongside providing medical care for acutely unwell infants and children, their role will require managerial and administrative skills as they lead and train teams of healthcare staff. They will be supported by supervisors in Bristol CED who also work as MSF Paediatric Advisors.

Posts commence March 2027 and are for a 12-month duration (6 months CED, 6 months MSF).

UHBW role: Senior Clinical Fellows will be responsible for the initial assessment and management of acutely unwell and injured children who self-present to the Children’s Emergency Department or who are referred by their GP. They will work alongside the multi-disciplinary team in the Children’s Emergency Department to provide excellent care to children from our local area and around the South-West. They will have the opportunity to take part in selected global health projects which will ideally relate to the MSF project they will subsequently work in.

MSF role: In the second 6 months, successful candidates will be placed in the field providing inpatient and/or outpatient paediatric and/or neonatal care according to MSF standards. As the paediatrician in most projects, they will be responsible for supporting a team of national doctors with their specialist paediatric and neonatal knowledge. They will lead clinical scenarios/ward rounds, consult on complex cases and deliver quality improvement projects. They will have regular support from the paediatric advisors and will be indemnified and insured under routine MSF HR practices. The MSF component is in effect a separate employment which is linked to the CED placement to provide continuity.

Bristol NHS Foundation Trust brings together more than 28,000 staff to deliver over 160 clinical services across thirteen hospital locations, operating from three main sites at Southmead, Bristol city centre and Weston. With an annual turnover of 2.6 billion, we are now one of the largest NHS trusts in the United Kingdom.
