This post is based within the Mental Health teamand Therapies service at HMP Wormwood scrubs to provide support to the prison establishment for the management and treatment of men (aged 18+) withvaryinglevelsof mentalhealthproblems andneuro-developmentalneeds.

The OT provision to a designated caseload, focusing on functional daily living skills and specific mental health and risk issues.

This will include overseeing and reviewing the OT referrals process as well as the assessment, treatment and evaluation of clinical interventions, planning and running a range of therapeutic individualand group work, carrying out functional assessments and contributing to multidisciplinary team care planning and risk assessment.

The patients are people with diverse needs and presentations, often with emerging mental health difficulties, including personality disorder and can exhibit impulsive behaviour.

The post will also include providing consultation and input (including assessment and intervention) to the prison neuro-diversity pathway, working with men presentingwith a learning disability, ASD, ADHD and/or acquired brain injury.

The post holder will work closely with the Multi-Disciplinary Team and relevant outside agencies, as wellaswith OTcolleaguesinotherestablishmentstoprovideaqualityservice, whichisresponsiveto clients’ needs.

HMP Wormwood scrubs is a Category B remand establishment which holds up to 1200 inmates.

The Therapy team consists of Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists and various support staff.

This OT role will include the assessment, treatment and evaluation of clinical interventions for service users within the wellbeing centre, inpatient unit, and wider prison, carrying out functional assessments and contributing to multidisciplinary team care planning and risk assessment.

The postholder will work alongside the Lead OT in developing and reviewing the Wellbeing Centre (Seacole centre) programme to ensure that it meets the changing needs of the prison population.

They will take a senior role in the provision of input into the therapeutic group work programme within the wellbeing centre, facilitating psycho-ed groups with members of the psychology team, overseeing the work of specialist sessional workers providing creative activities, and the development and running of OT specific groups along side the OT lead

The postholder will have a keyworking role to a designated caseload and will take on a role as senior OT with a significant guiding and leading the daily work of the team.

They will work closely with the Multi-Disciplinary Team and relevant outside agencies, as well as with OT colleagues to provide a quality service, which is responsive to client’s needs.

In order to meet the needs of the Trust you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work.

This may mean that you are required to work at any location that fall under Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey or Islington.

The Trust reserves the right to require staff to work at such other places or locations as it considers reasonable and necessary on a temporary or permanent basis.

  • To record assessments, interventions, reports and statistics to a competent standard in line with professional standards, Trust policy and established service systems.
  • To communicate treatment plans and clinical reasoning for interventions to other members of the multidisciplinary team and to work in collaboration with other disciplines and staff in clinical work.
  • To co-facilitate groups with members of the multi-disciplinary team when appropriate, and to provide guidance to other disciplines in the running of groups.
  • To regularly communicate information to other members of the Therapy Service about individual patients’ treatment, management and discharge plans.
  • To make links with outside community resources, such as colleges, other services to aid the reintegration of prisoners back into the community or transfer to other mental health services.
  • To liaise regarding potential prisoner attendance or involvement, as appropriate, with other disciplines and agencies in Health, Social Service, Education, the voluntary and private sectors and the Criminal Justice System.

In particular, to ensure links within the prison are maintained and progressed.

  • To participate in OT, wellbeing centre and business meetings as appropriate to area of work.
  • To attend regular supervision sessions and be an active participant within the supervision process.
