We are seeking a skilled and motivated Senior Medical Technologist to join the Technical Services team at the Lane Fox Respiratory Unit.

The role involves maintaining, repairing, and supporting life-supporting respiratory and ventilation equipment used across hospital wards, satellite units, and patients’ homes.

The post requires hands‑on technical expertise atsystem, component, and circuit level, including electronic fault‑finding, repair, modification, and soldering, to ensure equipment is safe, reliable, and compliant with regulatory and manufacturer standards.

Excellent communication skills are essential.

You will work closely with patients and a wide multidisciplinary team, including consultants, nurses, and physiotherapists, providing clear technical advice and supporting the safe clinical use of complex medical devices.

The role includes community and multi‑site working; therefore, a full UK driving licence is required.

This is an opportunity to specialise in respiratory technology within a leading centre for chronic respiratory failure and long‑term ventilation, directly contributing to patient safety and quality of life.

Appointments will be at Band 6, with trainee applicants considered via the Annex 21 training pathway, progressing to Band 6 on successful completion.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Service, fault‑find, and repair respiratory and ventilation equipment atsystem and component/circuit level, including electronic diagnostics and soldering.
  • Ensure equipment is safe, tested, and compliant with Trust, manufacturer, and medical device regulations.
  • Maintain and calibrate test equipment and records.
  • Participate in the on‑call rota, supporting hospital and community patients.
  • Install and maintain equipment across sites and in patients’ homes, using Trust vehicles; full UK driving licence required.
  • Provide technical advice and training to healthcare professionals, patients, families, and carers.
  • Support equipment trials, service improvement, and training of junior staff and trainees (including Annex 21).
  • Ensure safe handling and decontamination of equipment in line with infection control policies.
  • Relevant science or engineering degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Component‑level electronic fault‑finding and repair skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, with interest in respiratory technology.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Experience with medical devices (especially ventilators).
  • Experience delivering training.
  • Knowledge of NHS policies, on‑call services, and RCT eligibility.

The Lane Fox Respiratory Unit provides specialist care for patients requiring invasive and non‑invasive ventilation.

The service includes a14‑bed unit at Guy’s Hospital, a20‑bed satellite weaning unit at East Surrey Hospital, support forover 2,600 community patients, and technical support to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital paediatric respiratory service.

Core service hours are9am–5pm, Monday to Friday, with24/7 technical cover provided via an on‑call rotato support patients and clinical teams.

  • Job Purpose
  • To provide specialist maintenance, repair, and technical support for respiratory and ventilation equipment at both system and component/circuit level.

The postholder will ensure the safety, reliability, and effective operation of equipment used within hospital and community settings, directly supporting the care of patients dependent on life‑support technology.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carry out routine servicing, fault‑finding, and repair of respiratory and ventilation equipment, including electronic diagnosis and repair at component and circuit level.
  • Ensure repaired equipment is safe and compliant with departmental test procedures and policies.
  • Withdraw non‑compliant equipment from service and report appropriately.
  • Maintain test and calibration equipment.
  • Participate in the on‑call rota, providing 24/7 technical support.
  • Manage and maintain Trust property, including vehicles, tools, test equipment, and mobile devices.
  • Ensure safe handling and decontamination of contaminated equipment.
  • Training and Education
  • Provide technical instruction to patients, families, and carers during discharge, ensuring safe use of home equipment.
  • Deliver training to multidisciplinary teams, nursing staff, and junior technologists.
  • Contribute to departmental and Trust mandatory training programmes.
  • Mentor trainee technologists, particularly those on the Annex 21 pathway and/or apprentice schemes.
  • Research and Development
  • Support the evaluation, assessment, and trial of new respiratory equipment and technologies in collaboration with medical and nursing staff.
  • Contribute to innovation and service development projects within the Lane Fox Unit.
  • Community and Patient Support
  • Undertake home visits to install, maintain, and repair ventilatory equipment in patients’ homes.
  • Ensure safe transport and handling of equipment.
  • Provide technical advice and reassurance to patients and carers in the community.

Requirements
