The Senior Digital Communications Officer is a key member of the Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) and Research Communications team of the Research Directorate. The team works to raise the profile of research, the BRC and the UCLH Research Directorate and to increase patient and public access to research by involving and engaging with patients and the public.
The post-holder will provide digital communications expertise to enable the UCLH Research Directorate which includes the BRC and the Joint Research Office to promote their activities, outputs and impact and to engage with and involve the public and researchers. The post-holder will provide expert guidance to senior managers and the Head of PPI and Research Communications on the latest developments in digital communications and how best to use them, and will be responsible for developing and managing a digital communications strategy for the Research Directorate, providing training where needed.
The Senior Digital Communications Officer will develop the Research Directorate’s digital communications to build public and patient engagement with our research and to make sure information reaches target audiences. They will generate multimedia content for the BRC and JRO websites, social media communications and other channels as appropriate, in conjunction with other members of the PPIE and Research Communications team. The post-holder will work to a professional standard on a range of digital communications outlets and tools including websites, newsletters, events, photographs, film and social media, targeting information to a wide range of audiences.
The Senior Digital Communications Officer will also support the production of print communications with design and distribution. Taking a proactive approach to their work, the post-holder will have strong technical expertise, a broad understanding of how digital communications can be used by public institutions, a strong visual design eye, an excellent attention to detail, good writing skills and an in-depth understanding of accessibility needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Taking a lead in planning, designing and producing digital and print content to share the innovative research taking place across the UCLH and UCL Joint Research Office (JRO) and the BRC.
- Creating and editing photographic and video content and overseeing contractors on media projects.
- Supporting design of digital and print communications materials for staff across the JRO.
- Writing and publishing news stories, newsletters, social media posts, UCLH intranet and new channels, such as digital screens across our hospitals.
- Working with the Research Communications Manager to implement a new research communications strategy, with a focus on supporting research inclusion and growing our commercial research portfolio.
- Embedding consistent and meaningful evaluation of digital engagement and social media.
- Proactively monitoring trends in digital engagement and social media use across central government, the NHS, the wider public sector and elsewhere to identify and then apply best practices.
- Supporting team members with the planning, promotion and delivery of community engagement events and research open days.
