This role is to support a woman. A driver's licence is required. Employment status: Employed. Hours that need covering are weekends, evenings, and some daytime hours (days/times TBC). Multiple roles/shifts available. Hourly pay rate: £14.85 per hour.

We are looking for committed and reliable support workers to join a small team providing one-to-one care for a young woman with complex medical needs in her own home. This rewarding role involves both personal care and clinical tasks, as well as supporting her to enjoy an active and fulfilling life in the community. She loves going out—whether it’s to the cinema, coffee shops, or the local pub—and is usually supported 2:1 on outings. You’ll need to drive her wheelchair-accessible vehicle and assist with her wheelchair while out and about. A full driving licence is essential.

At home, duties will include personal care such as changing incontinence pads and assisting with hygiene, as well as clinical support including PEG feeding, suctioning, and respiratory care using a PEP mask. Although she has a PEG, she also enjoys some puréed meals, which you may need to heat and help feed. Medication administration for epilepsy (including buccal Midazolam), manual handling with hoists, and light household tasks like washing and ironing are also part of the role. Shifts include day and waking nights with some weekends on a rota, therefore multiple roles would be considered.

The home is shared with family members, including an adult with Down’s syndrome. While you won’t be supporting her directly, you’ll need to be respectful of the household dynamic. This is a varied, meaningful role in a supportive environment. Full training is provided — what matters most is a calm, caring approach and a genuine passion for helping others.

  • Providing personal care, including washing, hygiene support, and changing incontinence pads
  • Administering medication for epilepsy, including buccal Midazolam (regular and rescue)
  • PEG feeding and basic preparation of puréed food (heating and feeding as needed)
  • Using suction equipment and supporting respiratory care with a PEP mask
  • Manual handling and use of hoisting equipment
  • Driving her wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) for outings
  • Assisting with mobility and pushing her wheelchair during community activities
  • Supporting her during trips out (cinema, pubs, coffee shops, parks) – often in a 2:1 ratio
  • Providing companionship and encouraging engagement in social activities
  • Domestic tasks such as washing and ironing clothes
  • Maintaining a calm and responsive approach in medical situations
  • Respecting the dynamics of a family home, which includes other household members
  • Respectful of the employer's privacy and confidentiality
  • Reliable with good timekeeping
  • Able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative
  • Hygienic, tidy and well organised
  • Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties
  • Patient and possess excellent interpersonal skills
  • Honest and cheerful
  • Creative
  • Able to always work to high standards of health & safety

All applicants must have the right to work in the UK and be willing to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check if required. If the role is offered on a self-employed basis, you will be responsible for the cost of your own DBS check. If you are successful in your application for this position, you will be either engaged directly or employed by the individual employer and not by Independent Lives. The role may be offered on an employed or self-employed basis, depending on the suitability and agreement with the employer. If the role is employed, you will be entitled to holiday pay and issued an employment contract.
