We're looking for someone with the confidence and experience to identify opportunities, challenge thinking, and help unlock innovative solutions within complex regulatory environments.

What You'll Be Responsible For:

  • Environmental Strategy & Leadership
    • Lead the development, implementation, and continual improvement of the organisation's Environmental Management System (EMS)

    • Act as the organisation's environmental subject matter expert and key advisor to senior stakeholders
  • Environmental Compliance & Permitting
    • Lead environmental permitting activities, including permit applications, variations, maintenance, and compliance management
    • Develop strong working relationships with regulatory bodies including the Environment Agency and SEPA
    • Interpret environmental legislation and permit conditions, translating them into practical operational controls
    • Lead inspections, audits, regulatory engagement, and compliance activities across multiple sites
  • Sustainability, ESG & Circular Economy

    • Carbon management and Net Zero activities
    • Environmental impact reduction programmes
    • Contribute to ESG reporting, performance monitoring, and sustainability strategy development
    • Identify opportunities to embed environmental thinking into customer projects and innovation programmes

  • Multi-Site Governance & Assurance
    • Provide environmental oversight across multiple technical and manufacturing sites
    • Develop KPIs, dashboards, reporting frameworks, and environmental performance metrics
    • Conduct audits and assurance activities to identify risks and improvement opportunities
    • Support site leaders with environmental incident management and corrective actions
  • Business & Customer Support
    • Support commercial, technical, and bid teams in assessing environmental requirements within new opportunities
    • Ensure new projects and technologies are developed in compliance with environmental obligations
    • Help identify practical solutions to complex environmental challenges within innovative and evolving technologies

About You:

You are an experienced environmental professional who combines strong technical and regulatory knowledge with commercial awareness and a pragmatic approach to problem-solving. You'll bring:

  • Significant experience in an environmental leadership or management role
  • Strong knowledge of environmental permitting and UK environmental legislation
  • Experience operating within regulated industrial, technical, manufacturing, energy, chemical, pharmaceutical, or engineering environments
  • Demonstrable experience implementing and managing Environmental Management Systems aligned to ISO 14001
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills
  • Experience working with regulators, inspections, audits, and compliance activities
  • The ability to balance environmental compliance with business growth and innovation objectives
  • Chartered Environmentalist status or professional membership of IEMA, ISEP, IES, or equivalent
  • ESG and sustainability reporting experience
  • Circular economy, waste reduction, or resource efficiency programmes
  • Experience within science, manufacturing, R&D, advanced technology, GMP, chemical processing, or technically complex environments
  • Experience working with emissions, solvents, waste management, or environmental permits in regulated settings

The Opportunity:
