This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to work in a high secure setting, where you will support and encourage patients with acute and enduring mental illness to engage in meaningful physical activity as part of their recovery journey and overall wellbeing.

As part of our dedicated Health & Fitness team, you will deliver engaging, structured, and patient-focused activities across a wide range of environments, including:

  • Ward-based gyms
  • Main Fitness Suite
  • Fitness Studio

You’ll play a key role in creating inclusive, motivating, and therapeutic activity programmes that promote physical health, build confidence, and enhance social engagement.

This role also offers the opportunity to step into leadership on shift, where you will support, supervise, and develop colleagues, ensuring activities are delivered safely, effectively, and to a high standard. The successful candidate must have a minimum of Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Taking a lead role in providing day-to-day support, guidance, and leadership within the Health and Fitness Department, working closely with a Band 5 Supervisor to ensure high-quality service delivery.
  • Bringing creativity and innovation by designing and delivering new and engaging health and fitness activities, responsive to patient interests, age, culture, and backgrounds — including both individual and group programmes.
  • Working collaboratively with Dietitians and Physiotherapists to plan and deliver targeted sessions that support patients with physical limitations, mobility challenges, and weight management goals.
  • Acting as a positive role model and key resource for the team, actively participating in and contributing to all patient sessions to maximise engagement and therapeutic benefit.
  • Ensuring the team maintains high standards of clinical documentation, supporting staff to record accurate, timely, and professional notes within RiO, in line with service expectations and timeframes.
  • Supporting the monitoring of patient progress by ensuring regular, high-quality reporting, including CPA and LATCH updates, capturing achievements, engagement, and areas for development.
  • Taking responsibility for maintaining a safe and compliant environment, ensuring that all daily, weekly, and quarterly checks and procedures are completed accurately and on time.
