We have an exciting opportunity to join the team at Queens Hospital GITU/HDU Critical Care Unit as an Apprentice Ward Clerk. Applicants should have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and good organisational skills. They should be computer literate and be able to work well under pressure to meet deadlines.

The main duties of the job will be to provide comprehensive and efficient clerical/administrative support to nursing and medical staff. This includes:

  • Ensuring the patients’ medical notes are tidy and organised
  • Nursing documentation is available
  • Answering phone calls and supporting the caller
  • Ensuring administration of the patient is in order on the IT systems
  • Ordering stock as required

You will also promote and encourage a caring and sympathetic environment for patients, relatives, and staff, ensuring that high standards of service are continually maintained. You will work as a member of a wider team in the Critical Care unit, covering the other Critical Care units Jubilee, KGH, and Neuro Critical care when needed.

Alongside the role, you will complete the Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner apprenticeship. If you already hold a Customer Service qualification at Level 2 or above, then you are not eligible to apply for this post.

To be eligible for an Apprenticeship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 18 years old or over
  • Have the right to work in the UK with a visa status that covers the duration of the apprenticeship programme
  • Have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the past 3 years

Ensure that all work related to the apprenticeship is completed in the given timeframe. This includes attendance at all workshops, meetings with your Education Coach, and all written assignments. Answer telephone calls and deal with queries appropriate to the role; referring all other queries to a suitable member of staff. To contact patients to notify them of appointments if requested by Nurse in Charge. To relay telephone messages to staff when necessary.

Use of the Electronic Patient Record: Admit and discharge all patients on the Electronic Patient Record within 24 hours of their appointment.
