The Lancashire Chest Centre (LCC) is one of the youngest Tertiary centresin thecountry and has evolvedto deliver innovative regional services over a large geographicalfoot printencompassing Lancashire and South Cumbria. Our NHSE commissioned Tertiary services include Severe Asthma, Long TermVentilationand Interstitial Lung Disease.The LCC also has nationally recognisedIinterventionalPulmonology and Complex Breathlessness/Airways Services.

The Respiratory services are undergoing a transformation project to support the delivery an effective7 dayfront endedrespiratoryservice with enhanced support for our local and regional patients.There is commitment to deliver7 dayconsultant led ward rounds, delivery of a7 dayrespiratory assessment unit to support early assessment of acute respiratory patients as well as the delivery of a dedicated 12 bedded Respiratory High Care Unit that supports the regionallongterm ventilation unit.

The LCC is evolving exciting links to regional Universities to develop an academic Respiratory Hub for Lancashire and South Cumbria and if you wish, youcanbe affordedtime to support engagement with the Universities to develop research and educational roles.

Some of the duties for this post include:

  • Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the Respiratory Service for the Directorate.
  • Provide direct input to patients; contribute to multi-disciplinary teams and lead the co-ordination of care for patients within Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
  • Participate in the Weekend Consultant on-call rota, telephonic cover, GIM oncall at Royal Preston Hospital with additional cover during colleague’s absence.
  • Share a 34 bedded respiratory ward (Respiratory ward and Respiratory Support Unit) with the other Consultant Chest Physicians and resident doctors.
  • Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
  • Develop close links with General Practitioners operating in the area.
  • Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceivedpriorities within available resources.
  • Carry out General and Specialist Respiratory Clinics. A standard template for each clinic has 3 New and 6 Follow up patients.

Modern Education Centres are based at both Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital sites and offer excellent library and study facilities, including PC/Internet support for staff and students.

As a teaching hospital, we encourage all our staff toparticipatein teaching and training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.We are committed to developing our teaching and academic activities and canfacilitatemeeting any training needs for these roles.

It is the expectation that every member of the consultant body will undertake teaching of undergraduate medical students, other learners and trainees alongside providing clinical care during DCC activity

We support the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal Colleges and are committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

You will receive the full support of the Trust and the Directorate to develop specialist areas of interest in line with Directorate business plans and the development of servicesgenerally withinthe Trust.
