The Royal Preston Cellular Pathology Department is looking for a suitably qualified Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our team, which offers experience in a wide range of histological techniques and specimen dissection.

The Cellular Pathology Team works alongside 14 Consultant Histopathologists, Specialist trainees, and a SAS doctor in the Department of Cellular Pathology within a large and established Pathology Directorate. The department has UKAS 15189 accreditation and processes approximately 34,000 surgical samples per year.

In this role, you will take a leading responsibility for supervising the Histology main laboratory, ensuring that workflows are managed efficiently and that the service operates to the highest standards. You will oversee the monitoring of EQA/IQC processes and help maintain full compliance with UKAS 15189:2022, supporting continuous quality improvement across the department.

Strong communication will be essential, as you will work closely with colleagues across the Trust and with external agencies to ensure a responsive and high-quality service. You will provide expert technical advice on a wide range of Cellular Pathology matters and handle enquiries from both professionals and the public with tact, diplomacy, and professionalism.

As part of your leadership duties, you will undertake appraisals for BMS staff, supporting them in developing meaningful Personal Development Plans. You will also identify training needs within the Cellular Pathology Laboratory team and work collaboratively with the Head BMS to ensure appropriate development opportunities are in place.

We have 10,000 fantastic people working hard to deliver quality services to our patients. Whatever your role, you help look after 370,000 people in our local area and give specialist care to 1.5 million people across Lancashire and Cumbria.

Working with us gives you the knowledge and sense of pride that every activity you do genuinely makes a difference to support our patients and staff, ensuring we keep thriving and delivering outstanding healthcare right across our local towns.

You’ll have access to varied development opportunities, learn new skills, meet great people, and do things you’d never have done. You’ll learn about working in a hospital, interacting with people from all different roles to build skills and enhance your career path.

You’ll make an impact, be challenged to think differently, be bold, and help innovate to keep improving things. Everything we do centres around patient care and enhancing their experience, which means your role is pivotal and something really to be proud of.

The successful candidate should be well motivated, have proven technical and communication skills, and extensive Cellular Pathology knowledge.
